View of Merano and the River Adige

The subtitle already gives it away ... During this stunning holiday starting from the Bavarian state capital via the Resia-pass all the way into the cultural city of Merano even not so experienced cyclists gleefully manage to cross the Alps. You are accompanied by marvellous views en route along Lake Starnberg. The historic so-called Lüftlmalerei-paintings on the front of the houses in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Mittenwald will fascinate you. You will marvel at the views onto Mount Zugsspitze, the Karwendel mountains and Mount Ortler. And a best-developed cycle path in South Tyrol will magically bring a smile to your face. In Merano at the latest you will agree how diverse and comfortable crossing the Alps can be.

Take advantage of your day in Munich for a break in the English Garden or a shopping spree around Stachus. The first stage is dedicated to the Bavarian lakes, especially Lake Starnberg. The Murnauer Moos is considered the largest moor in Central Europe – on day 3, as you cycle towards Garmisch-Partenkirchen with its beautiful old town, you pass through the nature reserve. The final kilometers in Germany take you through the picturesque town of Mittenwald and through the Leutasch Gorge.

Upon arriving in Austria, you'll cycle along the Inn River to the Cistercian monastery in Stams and then continue to Imst. We save you the journey from Landeck to Nauders with a bus transfer – instead, take the time to enjoy the magnificent view of Lake Reschen. The final stage is lined with castles and palaces, such as Reinhold Messner's Castle Juval, offering splendid views of the majestic Ortler.

  • The Bavarian capital: Munich is full of contrasts – in a good way! Visit a traditional beer garden or try the many modern restaurants in the city center. The Residence and Nymphenburg Palace bear witness to majestic eras, while the Olympic Park and the Werksviertel offer a multitude of activities and events.
  • Germany's highest mountain: In Garmisch-Partenkirchen, a ride on the Zugspitzbahn is highly recommended. At the summit, you'll have a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountain landscape with numerous peaks above 3,000 meters. Take a break at the restaurant, which offers panoramic views and a chance to relax.
  • In Sissi's footsteps in Merano: Even the famous Empress Elisabeth ‘Sissi’ appreciated the flair and climate of the second-largest city in South Tyrol. Stroll along the Passer Promenade and treat yourself to a relaxing break in one of the charming cafes in the Old Town. Our recommendation: The botanical gardens of Trauttmannsdorff Castle are well worth a visit.

Indulge in selected accommodations above the standard during our charm vacations. The Eurobike team is at your disposal throughout the entire tour, offering assistance with the carefully planned route, luggage transfers, or the service hotline. Your package includes a transfer, namely over the Reschen Pass. Gentle inclines are to be mastered on each stage; otherwise, the routes ranging from 40 to 65 kilometers are easily manageable.

itinerary at a glance

Contrasts in Bavaria, with the cosmopolitan city of Munich and rich traditional customs, the harmonious interplay of humanity and nature in Austria, and a unique slice of Italy nestled in South Tyrol await you on this cycling journey through the Alps.

Bavaria’s state capital awaits its visitors with numerous sights (English Garden, town hall, ‚Hofbräuhaus‘,…).

From Munich, the tour starts with a bike ride through Forstenrieder Park to Lake Starnberg. Then you will cycle on the lakeside road to Seeshaupt. You will continue on wonderful ways through rustic Bavarian towns, past the Lake Osterseen and Lake Riegsee to Murnau am Staffelsee.

First, you will cycle through the nature reserve called Murnauer Moos the largest swamp area of Central Europe. Later, you will continue your tour through unspoiled nature following the River Loisach to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The stage is intentionally brief. Therefore, there is still enough time for an individual trip with the Zugspitzbahn, a mountain railway. At an altitude of 2962 meters, you have a wonderful view of the Alps.

Today you proceed along the beautifully developed cycle path all the way to the river Isar. You cycle through the sunny high mountain valley with marvellous panoramic views onto the Karwendel- and Wettersteingebirge-mountains to Mittenwald. Here we highly recommend a break and to take a stroll throughh the village with its Lüftlmalerei-painted houses. You then continue in a spectacular fashion through the Leutaschtal to Austria. You cycle along the Leutasch-stream through the stunningly beautiful valley all the way into your day finish.

Today you cycle over into the Inn-river valley. You leave Leutasch on a country road leading you on gently hilly terrain before an eight-kilometre long descent takes you to Telfs. You cycle on the former towpath along the river Inn and so reach Stams with its Baroque Cistercian monastery. Then via Haiming it is not far to Imst, the so-called „North Tyrolean Merano‘.

Today, you will cycle along the river Inn, past the monastery Zams to Landeck. A bus will take you to Nauders from where you will cycle less than 100 metres in altitude uphill to the mountain pass Resia. From there, you will cycle downhill to Lake Resia and continue on minor roads to San Valentino.

Your day starts with a trip to Glurns (perfectly preserved medieval city walls). Then, you will cycle via the Montani ruins, through Silandro, down to Merano. On your way, you will come across some pretty castles (mountaineer Reinhold Messner’s castle Juval) and you will get marvellous views of the impressive mountain massif Ortlermassiv and the mountain pass Stilfserjoch. Since 2004, the Venosta railway has been operating again between Malles and Merano. You can almost always take this train to travel a part of your journey.

Now it would actually be nice to add a few more days ... It is also a great way to continue the tour all the way to Lake Garda.

difficulty level

Medium

You cycle on marvellous cycle paths and little side roads and only on very short sections on main roads. Nearly every day there are small ascents to be tackled. The Resia-pass will be bypassed via a bus transfer, then follows a descent of approx. 1200 metres in altitude to Merano. The route is mainly asphalted, a few longer sections also on well-maintained dirt roads.
