Three cyclists on beautiful cycle paths across meadows, with Lake Riegsee and the mountain panorama in the background

Bavaria, Tyrol, South Tyrol, and Trentino – you'll traverse all these breathtaking regions on your journey from Munich to Lake Garda. Along the way, one attraction follows another, whether it's charming villages, mystical gorges, fascinating nature reserves, or historic castles and fortresses. With eleven days at your disposal, you'll have ample time to savor all of this – along with culinary delights and cultural highlights.

You start your journey in "Minga," where big-city flair meets Bavarian coziness. The first leg is dedicated to lakes, as you cycle past Lake Starnberg, the Osterseen, and Lake Riegsee to Murnau am Staffelsee. Near Garmisch-Partenkirchen, a ride on the Zugspitze Railway is a great option before reaching Austria via Mittenwald and the Leutasch Gorge.

Traveling through the Inntal, you'll encounter the Cistercian monastery of Stams, Imst, and the Zams Monastery. As you cross the Reschen Pass, Italy extends a warm welcome where you can rejuvenate with an espresso or cappuccino. The ambiance takes on a more Mediterranean feel with every cycling kilometer. Initially gazing upon the Ortler, your route leads to the captivating Merano and then to Lake Caldaro. Passing through picturesque vineyards, you'll arrive in Trento before cycling towards the spectacular conclusion in Riva del Garda. Just before reaching the end, treat yourself to a well-deserved pistachio ice cream – you've earned it!

  • The Bavarian capital: In Munich, be sure to visit the Hofbräuhaus and the numerous traditional beer gardens – but the city has much more to offer! Stroll through Marienplatz, take a glimpse of the Frauenkirche, relax in the English Garden, and savor the royal ambiance in the gardens of Nymphenburg Palace.
  • Magnificent views of the mountains: The Zugspitze Railway quickly takes you to an altitude of 2,962 meters, offering breathtaking panoramas. From your saddle, you can admire natural landscapes such as the Wetterstein Mountains or King Ortler.
  • The variety of lakes along the route: So diverse and yet so enchanting! Lake Garda may reward you at the end of your journey with magnificent views, but the path leading there is equally impressive. The idyllic Lake Starnberg is just one of several Bavarian lakes along the route. On the South Tyrolean side, you'll catch sight of the famous church in Lake Resia and might consider taking a dip in the warmest bathing lake in the Alps, Lake Caldaro.

Mile after mile, this cycling journey guides you on well-designed bike paths and secondary roads from Bavarian idyll to Mediterranean landscapes. Each day, you cover distances ranging from 40 to 65 kilometers. During our charm tour option, you'll stay in unique accommodations that provide that extra touch of comfort.

Craving Mediterranean flair for your vacation? Explore our cycling tours in Italy, whether it's Tuscany, South Tyrol, or the Adriatic Coast. Whether starting from Munich, along the Moselle, or in the far north – Germany also offers countless magnificent cycling routes.

itinerary at a glance

From the cosmopolitan city of Munich to the popular Lake Garda. This promises spectacular stages past mountains and lakes, orchards and vineyards, with a crowning finish at Italy's most famous lake

Bavaria’s state capital awaits its visitors with numerous sights (English Garden, town hall, ‚Hofbräuhaus‘,…).

From Munich, the tour starts with a bike ride through Forstenrieder Park to Lake Starnberg. Then you will cycle on the lakeside road to Seeshaupt. You will continue on wonderful ways through rustic Bavarian towns, past the Lake Osterseen and Lake Riegsee to Murnau am Staffelsee

First, you will cycle through the nature reserve called Murnauer Moos the largest swamp area of Central Europe. Later, you will continue your tour through unspoiled nature following the River Loisach to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The stage is intentionally brief. Therefore, there is still enough time for an individual trip with the Zugspitzbahn, a mountain railway. At an altitude of 2962 meters, you have a wonderful view of the Alps.

Today you proceed along the beautifully developed cycle path all the way to the river Isar. You cycle through the sunny high mountain valley with marvellous panoramic views onto the Karwendel- and Wettersteingebirge-mountains to Mittenwald. Here we highly recommend a break and to take a stroll throughh the village with its Lüftlmalerei-painted houses. You then continue in a spectacular fashion through the Leutaschtal to Austria. You cycle along the Leutasch-stream through the stunningly beautiful valley all the way into your day finish.

Today you cycle over into the Inn-river valley. You leave Leutasch on a country road leading you on gently hilly terrain before an eight-kilometre long descent takes you to Telfs. You cycle on the former towpath along the river Inn and so reach Stams with its Baroque Cistercian monastery. Then via Haiming it is not far to Imst, the so-called „North Tyrolean Merano‘.

Today, you will cycle along the river Inn, past the monastery Zams to Landeck. A bus will take you to Nauders from where you will cycle less than 100 metres in altitude uphill to the mountain pass Resia. From there, you will cycle downhill to Lake Resia and continue on minor roads to San Valentino.

Your day starts with a trip to Glurns (perfectly preserved medieval city walls). Then, you will cycle via the Montani ruins, through Silandro, down to Merano. On your way, you will come across some pretty castles (mountaineer Reinhold Messner’s castle Juval) and you will get marvellous views of the impressive mountain massif Ortlermassiv and the mountain pass Stilfserjoch. Since 2004, the Venosta railway has been operating again between Malles and Merano. You can almost always take this train to travel a part of your journey.

Via Lana and through numerous orchards and vineyards in the area of the South Tyrolean Wine Road, you cycle past many fortified castles, palaces and ruins such as Hocheppan with its important frescoes to Lake Caldaro.

Along the beautifully developed cycle path of the Adige River to Salorno, where German-speaking South Tyrol ends. The famous Trentino vineyards lie to the side of the embankment paths. These lead to Trento with its old town worth seeing with the cathedral and Buonconsiglio Castle.

You continue to follow the cycle path along the Adige River via the old Tyrolean border town of Rovereto to Mori. From here, the tour heads west towards Lake Garda. In Mori you can taste the widely known pistachio ice cream or a freshly squeezed fruit juice at the Gelateria Bologna. After a short ascent at the small Passo S. Giovanni, you descend to the lake at Riva del Garda.

You cycle on marvellous cycle paths and little side roads and only on very short sections on main roads. Nearly every day there are small ascents to be tackled. The Resia-pass will be bypassed via a bus transfer, then follows a descent of approx. 1200 metres in altitude to Merano. The route is mainly asphalted, a few longer sections also on well-maintained dirt roads.
