Small boat in the Spreewald

Located as a biosphere reserve in the heart of Brandenburg, the Spreewald captivates visitors with its exceptional beauty. Canals and tributaries of the Spree weave through dense forested areas. Alongside Cottbus, you'll explore characteristic towns such as Lübbenau and Burg. Culinary delights await in the Spreewald, renowned for its famous gherkins served in various styles. This is why your cycling journey spans seven days along the Gherkin Cycle Path.

Start your vacation by immersing yourself in the university town of Cottbus before setting off on a scenic cycling adventure through the picturesque Spreewald. En route to Lübbenau, take time to visit the White Stork Center or explore the Gherkin Museum in Lehde. A delightful detour through the Lower Spreewald, following the river loop to Golßen, brings you to your day's destination in Lübben.

On day 4, you'll enjoy stunning views from the observation tower in the Krausnick mountains and at Lake Köthen. The charming village of Burg, a quintessential spot in the Spreewald, beckons you to take your time exploring. The final day of cycling introduces you to the Peitz pond landscape, a remarkably serene region known for its unique flora and fauna that will captivate your senses.

  • Attractions in charming Cottbus: The Spremberg Tower offers marvelous views of the town, while the Altmarkt and the well-preserved old town are perfect for a leisurely stroll. Explore intriguing exhibitions at the Diesel Power Station Art Museum and the Pückler Museum in Branitz Castle. The modern university campus, along with its library, is also highly recommended for a visit.
  • A highlight of the Krausnick mountains is the panoramic view from the Wehlaberg. On clear days, you can marvel at sweeping vistas of the surrounding area and the nearby rivers of the Spreewald. Additionally, located here is the renowned "Tropical Islands" theme park, housed in a converted airship hangar and considered one of Europe's largest tropical adventure worlds.
  • The Peitz pond landscape spans approximately 1,600 hectares, making it one of the largest contiguous pond landscapes in Europe. It comprises numerous artificial fish ponds, primarily established in the 16th century for carp farming. Fishing has a rich tradition in this area, and to this day, the ponds are actively used for fish breeding.

The Gurken-Radweg is a 260-kilometer long-distance cycling route in the Spreewald, renowned for its excellent maintenance and gentle terrain. It winds through charming villages and historic towns such as Lübbenau, Lübben, Burg, and Cottbus, offering cyclists a glimpse into the region's rich cultural heritage. Along the way, you'll encounter traditional cucumber farms, museums, and pristine nature reserves. As a delightful treat, indulge in cucumber ice cream or classic flavors at the picturesque castle. Admission to the Lehde Cucumber Museum is also included in the tour, enhancing your experience with insights into the region's cucumber culture.

Join us on a cycling tour of Central Germany. In addition to the Spree, numerous other rivers and lakes in this region of Germany are waiting to be explored by you.

Itinerary at a glance

Dense forests and the waterways of the Spree accompany you along the Gurkenradweg (Cucumber Cycle Path). Visit the White Stork Center in Vetschau and explore the municipality of Burg. Cottbus shines with plenty of green spaces, such as in Branitz Landscape Park.

The "green city" of Cottbus awaits your visit with the world-famous landscape park Branitz of Prince Hermann von Pückler-Muskau, the Spreeauenpark and the zoo.

Today's cycling stage takes you to Lübbenau, where you can explore an old town worth seeing. On the way in Vetschau, a detour to the white stork center is worthwhile. In Lehde, a listed Spreewald village, you will learn interesting facts about the tradition of cucumber cultivation in Germany's unique cucumber museum. Also worthwhile is a visit to the open-air museum Lehde, which is dedicated to life in the Spreewald in the 19th century. Afterwards you cycle to Lübbenau, where a worth seeing old town awaits you.

You cycle the Gherkin cycle path from Lübbenau first to Lübben and then into the western Lower Spree Forest. A loop via Golßen finally leads you back to Lübben - today's destination. In Golßen, a stop at the farm store of the Spreewaldhof gherkin factory is worthwhile.

Experience nature and enjoy active recreation on a round trip through the Lower Spree Forest. Via Lubolz, northwest of Lübben, the trail leads you to Krausnick with its Kreuzkirche church. The nearby Wehlaberg is with 144 m height the highest elevation of the Krausnick mountains. From the wooden lookout tower you have a comprehensive panoramic view over the vastness of the Spreewald. Passing the Köthener See and Groß Wasserburg, you will finally pass various groups of ponds and reach Lübben again.

At the end of your bike tour, explore the idyllic Spree Forest community of Burg. It originated as a scattered settlement in the 6th century and represents the largest village in Germany in terms of area. Try "cottage cheese and flax oil ice cream" or "cucumber ice cream", to which we are happy to invite you in Burg.

On this stage you cycle through the Peitzer Teichlandschaft back to Cottbus. Covering 1,000 hectares, the pond area is home to numerous animal and plant species, some of which are endangered species.
