Embark on an enchanting eight-day cycling adventure, tracing two beautiful rivers from Saarbrücken to Coblenz. Begin your journey along the Saar Cycle Path, where French influences intertwine with the industrial heritage of the region. Explore the intriguing remnants of coal mining and ironworks, alongside the rich history of viticulture that accompanies you along the Moselle. Before immersing yourself in the charm of wine villages, discover the Roman city of Trier. Finally, conclude your unforgettable journey in the picturesque town of Coblenz.

Familiarize yourself with the capital of Saarland before embarking on your journey from Saarbrücken. Cycling along the Saar River, you'll traverse former coal mining regions and swiftly arrive at Saarlouis and the Saar bend near Mettlach. Journey through lush forests and the striking Saarburg en route to a significant highlight: Trier, Germany's oldest city!

As you transition to the Moselle, the renowned vineyards of the region unfold gradually. Passing through Neumagen-Dhron, the oldest wine village in Germany, your journey leads to Piesport, your stage destination. Days 5 and 6 are brimming with renowned wine towns. Bernkastel-Kues welcomes you with its charming timber-framed buildings, while in your overnight stop at Traben-Trarbach, you can savor a glass or two. Enkirch, Zell, Beilstein, and Cochem will also captivate you before the majestic Rhine Valley unfolds before your eyes as you approach Coblenz.

  • Fascinating insights into the Möllerhalle and views of the blast furnace: The Völklingen Ironworks, a former ironworks and UNESCO World Heritage Site, stands as a symbol of the industrial revolution. Today, it serves as a museum and cultural center. Explore its impressive industrial facilities, visit exhibitions on industrial history, and partake in cultural events.
  • The Saar Loop from the Cloef viewpoint: The Saar winds tightly around Mettlach, encircling a wooded hill and offering stunning views, along with plenty of photo opportunities. It takes approximately 30 minutes to ascend to the viewing platform, but the effort is truly rewarding!
  • The impressive UNESCO World Heritage Site of Trier: Renowned for its rich history and impeccably preserved Roman architecture, the city boasts impressive sights - be sure to visit the Porta Nigra, the Roman baths, and the Imperial Baths. A stroll along the banks of the Moselle is especially alluring. Additionally, a visit to the Rheinisches Landesmuseum is well worth it to delve deeper into the history of the region.

The stage lengths ranging from 40 to 60 kilometers and the flat routes are perfect for beginners and leisure cyclists. The cycle paths are exceptionally well-maintained, and the experiences are diverse. Indulge in the French influences prevalent in Saarland, particularly in culinary delights - whether it's tarte flambée, macarons, or prawns. A cycling vacation that caters to all the senses!

Itinerary at a glance

In Saarland, French flair meets industrial landscapes, while in the Moselle region, wine production triumphs. Visit quaint winemaker taverns in Traben-Trarbach or Cochem before strolling through the old town of Coblenz.

Stroll through Saarbrücken and feel the French flair. The changing affiliation of the city has left its tracks everywhere, as well in the cuisine. For the inhabitants it is common to eat snails or pate and to drink Pastis as aperitive. St. Johanner market with its pubs, bistros and restaurants is the heart of life here. The people meet each other here or stroll through the picturesque alleys around the market square. Between old baroque houses are noble boutiques and antique shops. So take your time for Saarbrücken, an early arrival is worth it. Your rental bikes are waiting in the hotel.

From Saarbrücken along river Saar to the ancient French city Saarlouis. In Völklingen you should plan a stopover to visit “Völklinger Hütte” which is part of UNESCO world cultural heritage. Afterwards you follow Saar bike path through Merziger Land to the impressing Saar loop at Mettlach. Exchange your bike with your trekking shoes and walk to viewpoint “Cloef”. Within 30 minutes you reach the top – enjoy the breath-taking views onto the river!

Via Saar bike path you continue to Saarburg, where the fortress is located majestic above many alleys. A coffee break in the picturesque inner city strengthens for the next kilometers. Along roman tracks you cycle via Konz to Trier. Be pleased about an individual city tour through the historic inner city, the thermal spa and Porta Nigra.

This day is a real classic with roman history and today´s wine culture. Along Moselle bike path you cycle to Mehring where villa Rustica is awaiting you which is a country house in the Roman Empire. You can visit the reconstructed buildings and walls. You continue relaxed to Trittenheim where a nature trail informs you about the work of winemakers. Before you reach your aim Neumagen-Dhron is awaiting you, it is the oldest wine village in Germany. You should taste a Schoppen here.

Today you visit well-known Bernkastel-Kues and Traben-Trarbach as well as wine-growing district “Kröver Nacktarsch”. Be astonished about the colorful half-timbered houses on the market square of Bernkastel-Kues and enjoy a wonderful journey by ship in Traben-Trarbach architectural treasures of the Art Nouveau and Belle Époque periods.

Today you explore Enkirch, a jewel of half-timbered architecture and Zell, a wine village. You should plan a stopover in Beilstein, which is also named “Rothenburg on river Moselle”. Be pleased about Cochem with its picturesque centre and the old fortress from 11th century.

Today you should make a detour to medieval fortress Eltz, before Moselle bike path leads you in well-worth seeing wine villages as Koben Gondorf and Winningen. Enjoy the wide views onto beautiful Rhine valley and be pleased about a nice evening in Coblenz.
