Itinerary at a glance

In addition to its medieval cityscape, Rothenburg ob der Tauber enchants with its Christmas Museum. The route is bordered by the Altmühl Spring, the Franconian Lake District, and the Episcopal city of Eichstätt, ending in the beautiful city of Regensburg.

The city is the embodiment of medieval city romance and was perpetuated from artists as Spitzweg and Richter. Let the night watchman guide you through the old town and learn from him about life in Rothenburg in earlier times.

You start above the Tauber and it doesn't take long to reach the Altmühl. A great alternative is the route via the nearby Altmühl spring (approx. 10 km longer). You pass the Zollernburg castle in Colmberg on the way to Herrieden. You can either take the direct route via Leutershausen or take a worthwhile detour via Ansbach.

Today you cross the former border of the Roman Empire, the Limes, and take a leisurely ride through the Franconian Lake District to your destination - either Weißenburg, which is home to the largest Roman treasure trove in Germany, the tranquil town of Wettelsheim or Treuchtlingen with its thermal baths.

On your today’s bike tour the valley gets narrower, river Altmühl cuts deeply into the Jura Mountain and you can marvel at the 12 Apostles, an impressive rock formation. Fortresses seem the way and Eichstätt presents itself as former bishop’s city in lovely baroque style.

Today's stage through the charming nature park, characterized by juniper heaths, is pleasantly flat and easy. Along the way, you will pass Kipfenberg, located near the geographical center of Bavaria and guarded by the imposing Kipfenberg Castle. The Altmühl River leads you back to Kinding-Enkering, where you can unwind and end the evening in a relaxed atmosphere at a beer garden.

Via Beilngries, situated between the Altmühl and the Main-Danube Canal, and Dietfurt, you will soon reach today’s stage destination, Riedenburg, with its three castles overlooking the town.

The last few kilometers take you to Kelheim, where you can visit the Liberation Hall or take a boat trip on the Danube to Weltenburg Abbey before cycling to Regensburg with its enchanting old town. Your cycle tour ends in the evening and it's time for your individual departure - or you can extend your stay and book an extra night.
