The Covered Bridges in Strasbourg

The second section of the Rhine Cycle Route, which this tour covers, takes you through three captivating countries. Your journey begins in Basel, Switzerland, and continues with views of the Vosges mountains as you head towards the German Breisgau region, where the sun-kissed city of Freiburg awaits. The final stretch guides you through the picturesque vineyards of Alsace, culminating in Strasbourg, France. Over the course of eight days, you'll experience not only the stunning urban and natural landscapes but also a wealth of cultural and culinary delights. After each day's ride, you'll savor delicious treats like tarte flambée, petit fours, and suri läberli, perfectly paired with a glass of local wine. Truly, life doesn't get much better than this!

Take some time to explore Basel, a fascinating city in northern Switzerland. As you cycle along the Rhine, you'll soon leave the urban landscape and countryside behind. Passing through Müllheim and the castle near Badenweiler, you'll arrive in the Breisgau region. The university town of Freiburg is especially enchanting. Here, you can enjoy stunning views of the Vosges mountains on one side and the expansive Black Forest on the other.

However, your route takes you towards the French border. Once you reach Neuf-Brisach, you enter Alsace, and in Colmar, you join the picturesque wine route. As you continue, scenic landscapes and lush vineyards accompany you, with charming villages like Turckheim, Kaysersberg, and Riquewihr inviting you to take a break. After Obernai, the vineyards gradually diminish, so take the opportunity for one last tasting. Following the Bruche Canal, you will finally reach Strasbourg.

  • The impressive Basel Münster offers magnificent views over the city and the Rhine, while numerous first-class museums, such as the Kunstmuseum Basel and the Fondation Beyeler, establish the city as a cultural center. Additionally, the Rhine promenade invites you to take a relaxing stroll.
  • Cycling & culinary pleasure in Breisgau: The well-established cycle paths lead through charming villages and historic towns such as Freiburg im Breisgau, where you'll be delighted by its old town, cathedral, and lively atmosphere. Don't miss the market hall, a bustling venue offering culinary specialties from the region and around the world.
  • The French Wine Route, known as the "Route des Vins d'Alsace," winds through picturesque Alsace. Along this route, you'll encounter charming villages like Riquewihr, Eguisheim, and Obernai, each captivating with their timber-framed houses, flower-filled alleys, and historic buildings. The region is renowned for its exceptional white wines, particularly Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris.

This journey consists of six cycling stages, adding approximately 270 kilometers to your biking tally. The diversity is evident in visiting three countries, while the route alternates between very flat and gently hilly sections.

The cycle path winds approximately 1,320 kilometers along Germany's longest river through multiple countries. Along the Rhine, you can cycle not only in Germany but also in Switzerland, Austria, France, and the Netherlands. Explore our travel options along the Rhine Cycle Route!
