Cycle path between flowering meadows and individual trees near Lake Starnberg

On the 9-day cycle tour from Munich over the Bavarian landscape, you can not only take in the special lifestyle of the region, but also enjoy the landscape, cuisine and culture on every kilometre on the bike. In the Bavarian capital you can soak up the pleasant big city feeling of the Isar metropolis, while you can recharge your batteries at Lake Starnberg, Sylvensteinsee and Tegernsee.

There is a lot to explore at the start in Munich. The city impresses with its diversity on the one hand, but also with typical Bavarian cosiness. Explore one of the numerous museums, stroll through the Viktualienmarkt and be sure to stop in a beer garden.

You continue to Murnau am Staffelsee, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, which is not only known for winter sport, and Gmund and Tagernsee where a wonderful panorama rewards you. Explore the enchanting villages, the ‘Murnauer Moos’ nature reserve and enjoy the views of the Karawendel and Wetterstein mountains.

  • The English Garden in Munich: With 375 hectares, it is one of the largest parks in the world and offers plenty of space to relax and slow down. But the area also has a lot to offer historically and culturally. Visit, for example, the Chinese Tower, the Rumfordschlössl or the Japanese Tea House. Tip: Watch the professional surfers at the Eisbachwelle at the southern end of the English Garden.
  • Swimming in the Bavarian lakes: Treat yourself to countless dops in the cool, and above all, clear water – the Bavarian lakes impress with their good water quality. In addition to Tefernsee and Lake Starnberg, the smaller Osterseen or Riegsee await with equally beautiful bathing areas.
  • Magnificent views of the Zugspitze: If you cycle the stage to Garmisch-Partenkirchen on day 4, turn your gaze to the southwest towards the imposing Zugspitze massif. If you want to go up high, you can take the cable car (on your own) to an altitude of 2,962m.
  • Bavarian customs in Bad Tölz: Whether beautiful traditional clothing, richly decorated house facades or music – in the traditional Bavarian cities around Bad Tölz there is a white and blue attitude to life. Already know this? Every year at the beginning of November, the Leonhardifahrt, a horse pilgrimage in honor of the patron saint of farm animals, takes place on richly decorated carriages.

Thanks to the wonderful panoramas and the mostly flat terrain with few climbs, the Munich Lakes Tour is a cycle tour for leisure cyclists. The trip is also available for families.

First, you will cycle through the natural reserve called Murnauer Moos (largest swamp area of Central Europe). Later, you will continue your tour through unspoiled nature following the River Loisach to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The stage is intentionally brief. Therefore, there is still enough time for an individual trip with the Zugspitzbahn, a mountain railway. At an altitude of 2962 meters, you will have a wonderful view of the Alps.

Hotel (example): Vier Jahreszeiten

By bike you cycle from Garmisch Partenkirchen via Klais to the beautiful Barmsee. Afterwards you have the option of cycling directly to your overnight accomodation or taking a detour via Mittenwald and Scharnitz to the source of Isar. A total of 300 metres in altitude are covered to Scharnitz, from there slightly uphill through wild and romantiv gorges and lush alpine meadows to the source of the Isar. Afterwards, you will cycle back through a sunny valley where you will have a marvellous panoramic view of the mountains of Karwendel and Wettersteingebirge, passing Mittenwald and finally arriving in Wallgau – a place where the Bavarian tradition is still a part of everyday life.

Hotel (example): Gasthof Post

Passing the Isarwinkel, you will follow the crystal-clear, turquoise waters of the impressive Lake Sylvenstein. Cycling through charming landscapes, you will pass Lenggries and finally arrive in Bad Tölz. The location at the crossroads of two trade routes - the River Isar and the old salt route from Reichenhall to Allgäu - quickly became a thriving trading centre. The ornate mansions testify the golden age.

Hotel (example): Kolberbräu

You will cycle through the scenic Tegernsee countryside to Gmund at Lake Tegernsee where you will have a beautiful panoramic view of the lake. Following the valley Gaißbach, you will come back to Bad Tölz. The thermal waters of the famous spa “Alpamare” will help you to refresh your tired muscles. The Tölzer Market Street invites you to learn more about the famous television series “Der Bulle von Tölz”.
