Moselle Cycle Path, Luxembourg – Koblenz

Moselle Cycle Path

8 Days / 7 Nights

View of Trier

Enchanting wine regions, picturesque river bends, and charming half-timbered villages: cycling along the Moselle is pure travel delight—and the route from Luxembourg to Koblenz is no exception. Quaint towns and rustic wineries line the way, with a special highlight being a visit to Germany's oldest city. In Trier, you’ll find several architectural masterpieces that are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Near Coblenz, the Moselle finally flows into the Rhine, and life revolves around the river promenades.

The capital of the Grand Duchy is also named Luxembourg, and its charming old town is definitely worth an extensive exploration. You’ll start by following the Alzette River, and before reaching your first stop, Remich, you'll need to conquer some hilly stretches. Upon reaching the Moselle, you'll pass through Perl and Konz, but the highlight of the day is undoubtedly Trier. From there, one picturesque village follows another—Neumagen-Dhron, by the way, is Germany's oldest wine village.

Take the opportunity to stop by the local wineries for a delicious glass of wine, perhaps in Piesport, Bernkastel-Kues, or Traben-Trarbach. You might recognize the name of one or two of these wine regions—for instance, on day 6, you’ll pass through the “Zeller Schwarze Katz.” You'll spend the night in Cochem, a town with origins dating back to the 11th century. The final leg of your journey offers more exciting sights, including Eltz Castle and, of course, your destination, Coblenz.

  • The city of Luxembourg, also known as the "City of Fortresses," offers a captivating blend of historical and contemporary attractions. Highlights include the impressive Bock Fortress and the UNESCO-listed old town, with its Gothic churches and charming squares like the Place d'Armes. The Grand Ducal Palace, the casemates, and the Petrus Tower are other fascinating sites that shouldn't be missed.
  • The Educational Wine Trail along the Moselle is an interactive themed trail that runs through the vineyards, offering you the chance to learn more about local wine cultivation and production. Along the trail, you'll find informational panels, interactive stations, and often opportunities for tastings, providing insight into the world of Moselle wine.
  • Say goodbye to the Moselle and Rhine at the Deutsches Eck: In Coblenz, a variety of attractions await you at the end of your tour. Take a ride on the cable car to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, where you can take in stunning views of CKoblenz and the Rhine Valley. A stroll through the old town is highly recommended but visiting the Deutsches Eck is an absolute must!

Right at the start of your eight-day cycling tour, you'll need to tackle some uphill sections on the stage to Remich. The route along the Moselle Cycle Path, however, is flatter and easier. With daily stages ranging from 40 to 55 kilometers, the total distance adds up to around 280 kilometers. This allows you plenty of time to enjoy the breathtaking scenery and numerous attractions along the Moselle. Our on-site team is available to provide information and tips whenever you need them.

Wine enthusiasts are familiar with the Moselle region, renowned worldwide for its exceptional wines. The Moselle Cycle Path offers even more—quaint half-timbered villages, historically rich cities, and a landscape brimming with natural beauty.

Itinerary at a glance

Museums, castles, and narrow alleys shape the capital of Luxembourg. Along the Moselle, you'll taste world-renowned wines and soak in the atmosphere of charming villages. In Trier, you'll visit the Porta Nigra and the amphitheater.

We recommend an early arrival to the European Culture City of 2007. Nowhere else harmonize contemporary buildings such subtle with old ruins and former castles and monasteries. Since many years Luxembourg belongs to an UNESCO world heritage site. Almost endless numbers of theaters and museums will inspire culture interested people. The bikes will be delivered the next morning to your hotel.

After breakfast you will leave the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The small river Alzette will escort you easily out of the city. The landscape and some small villages which you pass today will outweigh some short climbs.  Your destination Remich sprays Mediterranean flair and along the Moselle promenade you can relax while having a glass of wine.

From Perl the river Moselle marks the border between Germany and Luxembourg. On both sides of the river vineyards rise up. They will escort you almost as far as Koblenz and offer wonderful panoramic views. You will reach your today´s destination over Konz, where the river Saar flows into the river Moselle. Trier is the oldest city of Germany and you can explore 2000 years of history there.

Before you continue along the Moselle you should schedule some time to visit the well-known amphitheater as well as the Porta Nigra. An educational trail along your route reports on domestic grape variety. Close to Piesport you will pass Neumagen-Dhron which is Germany´s oldest wine village. Taste a glass of wine in Piesport - for sure this could be a nice finish of this beautiful cycle day!

Soon you will reach Bernkastel-Kues where many alleys and colorful half-timbered houses will impress. In any case you should taste the well-known “Bernkastler Doctor” (local produced wine). On your further way you will pass the wine growing district named “Kröver Nacktarsch”. A boat ride might offer beautiful views on the surrounding vineyards (not included). You have reached your today´s destination with Traben-Trarbach. The city offers many architectural masterpieces of art nouveau and Belle Epoch.

Also today the vineyards will escort your way. Enkirch is a trinket of half-timbered houses and ideally suitable for a brake. Always following the river Moselle you will pass another famous wine growing district which is called “Zeller Schwarze Katz”. Cycling over Beilstein, widely known as „Rothenburg on the Moselle River”, you will soon roll into Cochem. The charming center and the castle from the 11th century are just some highlights. Take enough time for a visit.

After a short distance you should make a side trip to the medieval castle „Burg Eltz“, which counts among the most beautiful and best preserved castles of Germany. Located in the heart of nature it offers magnificent views. Back to the Moselle bike path you pass numerous charming wine villages, before you reach your final destination Coblenz. The center is situated at the confluence of the Moselle River and the Rhine River and is extremely well-suited for a stroll.

In Coblenz there is much to discover. If you are interested in we would be pleased to book some extra nights for you. Our transferform Coblenz to Luxembourg is very comfortable (posible each Thursday and Saturday, departure: directly from the hotel, reservation required at time of booking.

On the first stage you need to consider some holly sections. You will cycle on small streets with low traffic but on asphalted terrain. From Remich you will follow always the rriver Miselle which mosly runs on paved roads and bike trails, continuously and well sognposted. Only less sections are shared with traffic, almost only when entering and leaving cities. Altogether a very easy bike tour which doesn't require more than basic fitness.
