The Flower Island Mainau

You will have to look around hard to find another classic cycle path that is as popular as Lake Constance. Three countries participate in the large lake in the heart of Europe. Austria, Germany and Switzerland add a special flair to the lake. This unique symbiosis of various cultures contributed a number of precious treasures of art. To mention only a few of them: Cultural heritage Island Reichenau, baroque style pilgrims church Birnau or the historic old town of Stein on Rhine. Add the marvellous countryside along the lake and a cycle path winding the way through idyllic meadows, along glittering water and in front of the stunning peaks of the Alps.

Embarking from Konstanz, your cycling adventure unfolds with visits to Gailingen and Stein am Rhein. For those on Category A of the cycling tour, the journey proceeds to Wangen. Afterward, you'll enjoy a direct path leading you to Überlingen (A), or you can opt for the scenic route via Ludwigshafen and Sipplingen to reach Überlingen (B). Your next destinations include Lindau (A) or the picturesque stops of Kressbronn and Nonnenhorn (B). Following an exploration of the lively festival city of Bregenz, Category A continues its path to Arbon, while Category B ventures towards Höchst and Rorschach. Ultimately, your adventure concludes as you make your way back to Konstanz.

  • Höri Peninsula: This picturesque peninsula was the home of the painter Otto Dix and the writer Hermann Hesse. It may be just 45 square kilometers in size, but it's a true paradise.
  • Friedrichshafen: Here, technology and history enthusiasts will find their interests well-served. You should visit the Zeppelin Museum, where a partial reconstruction of the famous Zeppelin Hindenburg is on display.
  • Bregenz: The capital of Vorarlberg is known for having the world's largest floating stage, where the Bregenz Festival takes place.
  • Konstanz: During a leisurely stroll, you can explore the harbor and the old town. Furthermore, this picturesque town is an ideal starting point for a short detour to the flower island of Mainau.

Following some hilly sections, the route becomes mostly flat and paved, running alongside Lake Constance. It's accessible, with only minor unpaved portions and a brief main road stretch near Friedrichshafen. This moderately challenging tour is suitable for families.

Itinerary at a glance

Constance is an ideal starting point for a visit to Mainau Island and the Sea Life Aquarium, for instance. Along the way through Switzerland, you'll come across picturesque villages, and in Vorarlberg, you can visit the world's largest lake stage in Bregenz.

Make the most of your stay and visit flower island Mainau, stroll through the very well maintained old town of Constance or visit the aquariums at the Sea Life Centre and the State Archaeological Museum.

On the southern shore of the Lake Untersee you cycle along the lakeside trough picturesque Swiss fishing villages to Stein am Rhein with its frescoed medieval houses. From there it is only a stone’s throw to the town of Gallingen or Wangen.

Today you will circumnavigate the Höri peninsula, where Otto Dix and Herman Hesse once lived. You take a brake in the old imperial and present-day spa town Radolfszell. Afterwards you cross the Bodanrück and have to accept a very short gradient. The arrival at the Lake Überlingen See compensate with great views of the Swabian Sea.

You cycle through vineyards to Friedrichshafen. On the way you will pass the baroque pilgrimage church Birnau. In Meersburg you should visit the beautiful old town and the old castle. A visit of the Zeppelin Museum in Friedrichshafen is worthwhile. Your journey continues to Kressbronn or to the island town of Lindau.

Cycling through large orchards you reach Bavarian Lindau, picturesque city on a peninsula. Next station is Bregenz. The capital of Austrian federal country Vorarlberg is renowned for the yearly summer festival on the biggest lake-stage worldwide. Finally, you reach Höchst, cross the border again shortly afterwards, and cycle a few more kilometers to Arbon.

On your last day you visit Romanshorn, largest and most important Swiss port on Lake Constance. Continue along Lake Constance back to Constance. Here, you can visit Mainau Island and end your trip with a stroll through the old town or an ice cream at the harbor.

After breakfast, you will begin your individual journey home or extend your stay.
