The Lahn Valley is famed for its stunning natural beauty, picturesque landscapes, and a plethora of recreational opportunities. Winding through the region, the River Lahn is adorned with verdant meadows, lush forests, and quaint villages. Historic towns and landmarks, including the half-timbered charm of Marburg, Braunfels Castle, and Runkel Castle, add to the region's allure. In essence, the Lahn Valley presents an enchanting fusion of natural splendor and cultural heritage, awaiting exploration on this leisurely seven-day cycling excursion.

Your adventure begins in vibrant Marburg, where centuries-old architecture intersects with a contemporary cultural ambiance. Pedaling through serene countryside, you'll journey to Wetzlar, with a detour to the historic Fortuna mine before reaching Weilburg. From there, with a backdrop of Weilburg's Renaissance castle, you'll continue your route along the Taunus and Westerland to Limburg.

On Day 5, historical wonders await, including Arnstein Abbey and Nassau Castle. The final leg of your journey transports you from Bad Ems to Koblenz. Within mere kilometers, you'll find yourself amidst the scenic beauty of the Rhine Valley. Cap off your cycling adventure with a boat excursion to the renowned Loreley, adding an unforgettable touch to your experience.

  • The Fortuna mine, operational since the 16th century and reaching its peak during the 18th and 19th centuries, stands today as a significant industrial landmark, offering a window into the region's mining history. Guided tours lead visitors through its tunnels and shafts, while exhibitions detail the rich mining heritage.
  • Limburg's cathedral stands as a pinnacle of medieval religious architecture, dominating the old town skyline and drawing visitors worldwide with its distinctive design and intricate adornments. The heart of Limburg beckons exploration, boasting historic half-timbered buildings, charming alleyways, quaint shops, and inviting cafes, all inviting you to leisurely wander and discover.
  • What sets the Loreley apart is not just its striking presence but also the myriad of legends and tales enveloping the rock formation. Among the most renowned myths is the story of Lorelei, a mermaid believed to have resided on the rock. Legend has it that she enticed Rhine boatmen with her enchanting song, leading to their ships being wrecked in the treacherous currents.

The area is renowned for both its outdoor pursuits and its abundant historical sites, showcased in Marburg, Wetzlar, the Fortuna mine, and Arnstein Monastery. The stages, with a maximum length of 55 kilometers, are generally straightforward to navigate, with just a few gentle inclines along the route.

The central German region traversed by the Lahn Cycle Path is a tapestry of untamed wilderness, romantic vistas, and breathtaking beauty. Rolling hills, dense forests, and verdant meadows interlace with charming historic towns and vibrant cultural landmarks. Tranquil cycle paths wind through bustling city centers, offering a delightful juxtaposition of serenity and liveliness along your journey.

Itinerary at a glance

The Fortuna Mine is an iron ore mine where you can learn about underground work. Furthermore, along the Lahn River, there are many historical sites such as Weilburg Castle, Limburg Cathedral, Nassau Castle, and Arnstein Monastery.

Visit the historic old town and Elisabeth church. Your rental bicycle is ready for you at the hotel.

You cycle in wide Lahn valley past idyllic little bathing ponds to Wetzlar. Explore the old town and interesting dome.

Cross the stony bridge to leave Wetzlar and soon you reach the old mine Fortuna (+8 km), Germany’s only iron-ore show mine, operating the original underground machinery. Take in the beautiful surroundings to Weilburg, where the renaissance castle stands in solitary splendour on a high rock above river Lahn.

Wedged in between the heights of Taunis and Westerwald the river winds its way. You cycle on the asphalted Lein path via Aumenau and Runkel to Limburg with famous dome.

Today you cross the unspoilt valley from Diez to Balduinstein, one of the most scenic parts of the tour. Two climbs can be avoided by using the train (11 km). Have a break at monastery Arnstein, at fortress Nassau or in historic Inn on Lahn before you reach Bad Ems.

After 12 km Rhine-valley opens up before your eyes. Here you crown your tour by an excursion (+31 km) via Boppard and St. Goar to Loreley. Return by boat to wine-growing town Braubach.
