Travel Story: The Lake Neusiedl Tour

Through the Vineyards to Bratislava in the Golden Autumn

After starting my career at Eurobike in 2022, one thing was immediately clear: I wanted to experience a Eurobike bike tour for myself as soon as possible. My father eagerly agreed, saying, “We’ll just get e-bikes and go cycling.” We chose the Lake Neusiedl tour, anticipating the vibrant city of Vienna, picturesque vineyards, and wind turbines, with the beautiful city of Bratislava as the crowning glory of our cycle tour on Lake Neusiedl.

Let the journey begin

At the end of a successful season, my father and I set off for Vienna, heading to our starting hotel, roomz, located right next to the Vienna Prater. We indulge in culinary delights at the Gasthaus zum Kaiser, savoring dishes like Krautfleckerl and Kaiserschmarrn. Back at the hotel, we attend the information session where we receive our travel documents and also our e-bikes. After the briefing, we wind down the day exploring Vienna's city center. My personal tip: visit the State Opera House and St. Charles Church at night!

From Baden to Rust on Lake Neusiedl

We cycle along the Danube through Vienna's city center, passing Schönbrunn Palace. In Perchtoldsdorf, we visit the castle of the same name and treat ourselves to a short coffee break. Shortly after Mödling, the first vineyards await us.

After a restful night in Baden, we head to Eisenstadt, where we visit Esterházy Palace and its lush palace gardens. In St. Margareten, we explore the next highlight: Austria’s oldest still-active quarry, which boasts its own opera house and open-air museum. To wrap up the second leg of our journey, we are treated to stunning autumn views in the vineyards just before Rust. We spot nests on many rooftops, and, if we're fortunate, a stork makes an appearance.

Once into Hungary and on to Jois

Lake Neusiedl is just a stone’s throw from Hungary. After a delightful breakfast in Rust, we set off across the border to Sopron, the former Austrian town of Ödenburg. We spend some time exploring this charming town, savoring a coffee, and then return to Rust for a restful night. The following day, we board the ferry from Mörbisch to Illmitz, and a whole new world reveals itself on the other side. Before us lies the expansive Lacke, a salty lake surrounded by a serene steppe landscape.

The area offers several viewpoints that invite us to linger and watch the variety of bird species in their natural habitat. Upon arriving at the Seeblick guesthouse, we are warmly greeted by the owner with a refreshing welcome drink. The experience is made even more special by the chance to enjoy a glass of fine local wine in the garden, all while taking in a prime view of Lake Neusiedl!

Cherry Blossom Cycle Path – A dream for wine lovers

My personal highlight of this tour is the varied Cherry Blossom Cycle Path along the Leitha Mountains. Vineyards stretch as far as the eye can see, and we even get to experience the grape harvest up close. The views extend over Lake Neusiedl and into the Hungarian plains. Along the way, we regularly encounter rest stops with information about the region. Traditional wine cellars are scattered throughout the route, making it a perfect experience for wine lovers.

Bratislava - saving the best for last

For the grand finale, we travel directly from Jois to Bratislava. Along the way, we pass countless wind turbines before arriving in the charming city of Bratislava. Our stay at the Hotel Devin, located right in the old town on the banks of the Danube, offers the perfect base for exploring. After a refreshing shower, we head out to explore the old town, enjoy dinner, and take in Bratislava's nighttime beauty. The next morning, after breakfast, we make our way to the historic castle for breathtaking views over the city. After exploring the castle, we visit the “UFO” observation tower. The elevator whisks us up over 90 meters, where a viewing platform, a restaurant, and a bar await. We savor a coffee while taking in the fantastic view of Bratislava.

My summary

The Lake Neusiedl Loop Tour – a perfect cycling experience for beginners. Due to the flat terrain, it’s suitable for all types of cyclists, even without electric assistance, though an e-bike does offer added comfort. I highly recommend this tour to wine enthusiasts. It includes city visits to Vienna and Bratislava, stunning steppe landscapes, and picturesque vineyards – ensuring plenty of variety. Plus, those cycling in September get the chance to experience the grape harvest up close.
