Our adventure begins in Florence, the capital of the Tuscany cycling region. Early in the morning, we set off to explore the city. We visit the famous Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral, then stroll through the narrow streets, admiring the historic buildings and artworks found at every turn. After a hearty dinner at a small trattoria, we take a final walk along the Arno River, the perfect way to end our day in Florence.

From the Capital of Tuscany to Passignano sul Trasimeno

On the first day of our adventure, we take the train from Florence to Arezzo early in the morning. Upon arrival in Arezzo, we are warmly welcomed by our local guide, my colleague Simone from the Toscana Station, who hands us our rental bikes. After a quick briefing, we're ready to start the first stage of our journey.

The route leads us through picturesque hills, lush vineyards, and olive groves, all quintessential to the region. Cycling here is an absolute delight – tranquil country roads, minimal traffic, and stunning views make the ride truly unforgettable. By late afternoon, we arrive at our destination, Passignano sul Trasimeno, a charming town nestled on the shores of Lake Trasimeno. We take in the breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding hills before wandering through the town’s narrow streets. The highlight of the evening is dinner at the hotel's restaurant, "La Vela", where we enjoy fresh fish from the lake, accompanied by a glass of local wine.

Off to the Capital of Umbria!

The second day begins with a relaxed breakfast, featuring fresh croissants and a strong espresso. Energized, we set off for the next stage of our self-guided cycling journey: from Passignano sul Trasimeno to Perugia.

The route first leads us to the picturesque Lake Trasimeno. The path along the lake is flat and easy to ride, allowing us to fully enjoy the landscape. The rolling green hills, dense forests, and scenic fields of Umbria provide a breathtaking backdrop. Along the way, we take several breaks to admire the view and recharge our energy.

In the afternoon, we reach Perugia, the capital of Umbria. The city is perched on a hill, and the historic old town, with its medieval buildings and the impressive San Lorenzo Cathedral, is truly captivating.

After a leisurely stroll through the charming old town, we end the day with a typical Umbrian dinner, reflecting on our experiences and looking forward to discovering more of Umbria's beautiful landscape the next day.

The Pilgrimage from Perugia to Assisi

The route to Assisi takes us through the gentle hills of Umbria, with their green meadows and olive groves offering a picturesque panorama. The weather is perfect: clear skies and a pleasant breeze accompany us throughout the day. Along the way, we stop in the small, charming town of Ripa, where we take the opportunity for a short break.

In the early afternoon, we reach Assisi, the city of Saint Francis. We are warmly welcomed by the staff at our comfortable hotel and after a short break, we stroll through the streets of Assisi, admiring the medieval buildings and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere.

On the Trail of History: From Assisi to Spoleto

On the Trail of History: From Assisi to Spoleto

On the fourth day, we journey through one of the most stunning landscapes of Umbria. The route takes us through diverse terrain, with gentle hills and quaint villages. Once again, we’re blessed with perfect weather - clear skies and brilliant sunshine. The day begins with a descent from Assisi into the valley, where we take in the breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. After about an hour, we arrive in the charming town of Bevagna, where we stop for a brief break to recharge and explore the historic old town.

Afterward, we continue along the cycle path for a few more kilometers toward Spoleto. Just before reaching our destination, we stumble upon a delightful spot, "Chateaux de Pep." We decide to extend our break and savor the regional cuisine and warm hospitality.

Finally, we tackle the last stretch up to the city of Spoleto. Upon arrival, we visit the city’s main attractions before winding down the day with a glass of red wine.

Mysterious Paths: From Spoleto to Narni

The penultimate cycling day takes us from Spoleto to Narni, a route rich in history and surrounded by breathtaking landscapes.

With clear skies and a refreshing breeze, cycling is especially enjoyable. We pass through small, charming villages where life seems to move at a slower pace. One mysterious village, in particular, captures our imagination—Porzano, where it feels as though time has frozen.

The road to Narni features some gently climbs, but the magnificent views make the ascent worthwhile. Upon reaching Narni, we take a short coffee break before setting off to explore the town's medieval charm.

The Final Stage: from Narni to Rome

The final day of our unforgettable cycling journey takes us from Narni to Rome. Energized and filled with excitement, we head toward the Italian capital. This leg of the journey offers more scenic beauty, with rolling green hills and expansive fields. Along the way, we pass through quaint medieval towns, each perched atop a hill.

Before the final stretch, we take one last brief stop, savoring a cappuccino and a freshly baked croissant at a charming café.

Arriving at the station in Poggio Mirteto, we are warmly welcomed by my colleague. We return our rental bikes and then board the train for the final miles to Rome.

After a short train ride, we reach the end of our journey. Eager to explore the Eternal City, we look forward to spending a few days there, while the memories of this incredible cycling adventure will stay with us for years to come.

My Favorite Place

The idyllic shore of Lake Trasimeno.

Right on the first cycling day, I find my favorite spot at Praia da Luz. As we ride down into the town of Luz, we begin to marvel at the view. After a brief stop at the Miradouro da Luz viewpoint, a spectacularly beautiful panorama unfolds before us on our left.

We cycle along the beach promenade to our lunchtime break. After securely parking our bikes, we settle into at a cozy beach café right by Praia da Luz. In an instant, the clouds vanish, the sun bursts through, and the palm trees complete the picture perfectly.
