Cycling in Switzerland often means conquering steep climbs and breathtaking heights, doesn’t it? Not on the Midland Route, though, which gently connects Eastern and Western Switzerland. Instead, you’ll be treated to a rich tapestry of landscapes and cultural treasures at every turn. This seven-day cycling adventure takes you from the lively city of Zurich to the French-inspired Lausanne, nestled on the picturesque shores of Lake Geneva. Along the way, you’ll pass through delightful towns, discovering Switzerland in the most authentic and heartwarming way.

Breathe in the cosmopolitan atmosphere of Zurich, and after your first overnight stay, hop on your bike heading towards Olten. You’ll pass through the Furttal and cycle through the Aare meadows across the dam. The following day, the route will take you to the Baroque city of Solothurn, before reaching your overnight destination, Biel. Day 4 is dedicated to the picturesque Three-Lake Region – why not take a refreshing swim before arriving in the fascinating medieval town of Murten.

The route takes you through the Broye plain, bringing you close to the German border. On this day, the impressive reed belt of Lake Neuchâtel will captivate you. Take a moment to listen to the many bird species that nest in this area. On the final leg of the journey, you’ll cycle through the Plaine de l’Orbe and finally reach the sparkling shores of Lake Geneva.

  • Sophisticated flair on Lake Zurich: The city and region are popular with the rich and famous for good reason. Zurich’s glamour blends historic charm with modern urbanity, featuring a picturesque old town and the sparkling Zurich Lake. Discover the Kunsthaus, stroll along Bahnhofstrasse, and enjoy the panoramic view from Uetliberg.
  • Enjoyment and nature in the Three Lakes Region: The region captivates with its idyllic lakes – Lake Neuchâtel, Lake Biel, and Lake Murten – surrounded by gentle hills and vineyards. Step off your bike and treat yourself to a boat ride! Charming towns like Murten and Biel lie along the route, where you can taste regional wines, explore historical sites, and discover nature reserves.
  • Olympic Spirit by Lake Geneva: Lausanne enchants with its lakeside location, surrounded by vineyards and the Alps. The charming old town, with its impressive cathedral, the vibrant cultural scene, the Olympic Museum, and the beautiful lakeside promenade, make the city truly special. Stroll through the market at Place de la Palud to discover local specialties and handicrafts.

The popular long-distance cycling route, the Midland Route, stretches over approximately 370 kilometers, from Romanshorn on Lake Constance to Lausanne on Lake Geneva. The flat terrain makes it perfect for leisure cyclists. The well-maintained paths gently wind through fields and forests, offering a soothing escape for all the senses.

Arrival in Zurich-Regensdorf

Through the Furt-valley of the Limmat, the bathing spot Baden, and on to marvel at the Gothic stained glass windows in Königsfelden and yellow irises of the river Aare floodplain, followed by a leisurely ride on the Aare dam to Olten.

Past baroque-town Solothurn along the meandering Aare to Dreiseenland (three lakes country). Just 130 years ago, this landscape was redesigned by man: the lake level lowered and marshes drained. Seeland is now the scene of intense vegetable cultivation.

A pleasant ride through the three lakes country. The little medieval town of Murten on the south-east bank of the lake of the same name has preserved its original appearance, with the picturesque alleyways of the Old Town and the pleasant shady arcades.

From medieval Murten to the small city Avenches. The small town of Avenches lies in the wide Broye Plain between the Lakes of Neuchâtel and Murten in the cantonof Vaud near the border to the canton of Fribourg. This former capital of Roman Helvetia has a rich and valuable heritage from Roman times. Now back to Lake Neuchatel. chirping in the reeds, waves lapping at the gentle shore, the Jura is shimmering in the distance. Over 100 species of birds breed in the Grande Cariçaie, the 40-km-long marsh and reed belt along the southern shores of the lake.

Flat and fertile: Plaine de l’Orbe, framed by Roman mosaics and the rolling hills of Vaud. In Mormont, the watershed of the Rhone and Rhine. Change of scene from the wild waters of the Venoge to the small silver «sea» of Lac Léman.
