Cycle path at Saillon

Rhône-Route, Brig – Geneva

From the glacier to wine

Cycle path at Saillon

The Rhône Route connects three distinctly different landscapes between Oberwald and Geneva. In Goms, the terrain is alpine, with the route mostly descending but featuring a few uphill stretches. From Brig onward, the Rhône Valley opens up. Nowhere else in Switzerland does the sun shine as often as it does here in Valais. Another dramatic shift awaits after Villeneuve: on one side, the expansive, sunlit waters of Lake Geneva; on the other, vineyards with prestigious names accompany cyclists as they head toward their destination in Geneva. The Rhône Route offers a wealth of scenic and cultural variety, and its flat profile makes it ideal for leisurely riders.

The Rhône Cycle Route is one of the most beautiful and diverse cycling trails in Europe. Spanning approximately 815 kilometers along the namesake river, it offers an incredible variety of experiences—explore this fascinating cycling destination on our pages.

You’ll start your journey in Brig, heading into the heart of the Valais Valley, where sunny weather is often on your side. As you cycle toward Sierre, you’ll pass through scenic vineyards and enjoy a delightful wine tasting. The route continues through Sion, offering breathtaking views as you make your way to Martigny. After an overnight stay, your next stop is Montreux, where you’ll pass the iconic Chillon Castle en route.

The route now follows the lakeshore, winding through the renowned wine region of Lavaux. On Day 5, you’ll arrive in Lausanne, the Olympic city, where the historic old town invites you to explore its cultural treasures. Vineyards continue to line your path as you head toward Nyon, where you can admire the beautiful Nyon Castle as well as the castle in Prangins. As ever-grander houses catch your eye along the way, you’ll know your destination is near—just a few more pedal strokes to the cosmopolitan city of Geneva!

  • Château de Chillon is an impressive waterfront castle perched on a small island along the eastern shore of Lake Geneva. Embark on an exploration of this architectural marvel, where you’ll not only admire its stunning design but also take in breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding landscapes from various vantage points.
  • Olympic flair in Lausanne: The city has been home to the International Olympic Committee since 1915, earning it the nickname "Olympic Capital." At the Olympic Museum, you can dive into fascinating insights about its history and significance. Beyond that, the charming old town offers plenty to discover, from stunning architecture to delightful culinary experiences.
  • The sophisticated city by the lake: Fascinating in its own right, Geneva is home to the WHO and the UN and is the birthplace of the Red Cross. Its charming old town boasts landmarks such as the Cathédrale Saint-Pierre, the International Museum of the Reformation, and picturesque squares like Place du Bourg-de-Four. And, of course, there’s the iconic Jet d’Eau, a water fountain soaring up to 140 meters high.

The route is mostly flat or gently rolling, making it suitable even for less experienced cyclists. While the fringes of the Alps can be slightly more challenging, most sections along the Rhône are moderate and easy to navigate.

Day
01
Arrival to Brig

The main valley of the Valais widens, the sun heats the dry mountain flanks. Between Leuk and Sierre you deviate from the Rhône route and ride through the vineyards to a winery. After a wine tasting, you continue to the castles of Sion.

The capital Sion shows off its historic castles, churches and stately homes. In the lower Rhône Valley, the Dents-du-Midi dominates the high-Alpine backdrop. It is the world of productive orchards and vineyards.

High above, a round tower guards Martigny on the Rhône bend, St-Maurice at the narrowest point in the valley guards golden church treasures. High mountains and lowlands, still hidden behind reeds, the expanse of Lac Léman, and then defiantly the fortress of Chillon Castle in the water.

Lac Léman, a small silvery sea surrounded by snowy peaks and vineyards, like the UnescoUNESCO World Heritage Site of Lavaux. Along the shore: Vevey, Montreux, and the metropolis of Lausanne, Olympic city and lifeblood of the Vaudois population.

The terraced vines between Morges and Nyon are known as "La Côte". Fruity Chasselas is pressed here and sweetens your ride. Down on the lakeshore, the market towns of Morges and Rolle pass by. Almost kitschy: the castles of Nyon and Prangins.

The open lakeshore becomes scarcer, the villas and yachts larger, and soon the cosmopolitan city of Geneva announces itself with boulevards and the 140 metre high water fountain "Jet d'eau".
