Cycle tour on Lake Geneva near Rivaz in the canton of Vaud

The Lakes Route truly lives up to its name, as countless bodies of water await you between the start at Lake Geneva and the destination at Lake Lucerne. The route passes through some of Switzerland’s most renowned tourist regions and charming towns with names that resonate: Montreux, Gruyères, Gstaad, Interlaken, and Lucerne... Anyone who completes the Lakes Route has seen the most beautiful corners of Switzerland.

A Swiss fairytale awaits you at the beginning of your journey as you cross the cheese region of Gruyère from Vevey. Amidst alpine meadows, cheese dairies, and Swiss idylls, you’ll reach the glamorous holiday resort of Gstaad, where you might catch a glimpse of a famous face. However, the focus remains on the stunning Swiss landscape, as you cycle to Spiez on Lake Thun on Day 4.

Continuing along the route, you'll pass both Lake Brienz and Lake Sarnen, crossing the Brünig Pass—though by train. Traditional villages and the majestic Pilatus mountain will accompany you in the final stretch, and before long, Lake Lucerne will appear before you. End your journey in Lucerne, a city that beckons you to unwind and savor the moment.

  • The Gruyère region is celebrated for its serene landscape of gentle hills, lush meadows, and breathtaking alpine panoramas. At the heart of the area lies the charming town of Gruyères, with its striking medieval castle offering sweeping views of the valley. This region is also the birthplace of the world-famous Gruyère cheese, drawing food enthusiasts from across the globe and offering a window into traditional Swiss cheesemaking—especially at the demonstration dairy in Pringy.
  • The crystal-clear waters beckon for a refreshing swim and thrilling adventures: Between Lake Geneva and Lake Lucerne, more lakes and rivers await, inviting you to pause at their shores and take a refreshing dip in the clear waters. On the Simme River, however, nature's power takes center stage, as you ride the rapids in a thrilling tube adventure through the valley.
  • Stroll through the charming streets of Lucerne: The city charms with its stunning medieval architecture, highlighted by the Chapel Bridge, one of Europe's oldest covered wooden bridges. Savor some fondue and chocolate—after all the cycling, you’ve more than earned these delicious treats.

Cycling in Switzerland presents a wonderful mix of experiences—cruising along serene shores and tackling rewarding climbs in between. The stretch from Spiez to Interlaken is made easier with a scenic boat ride. Covering up to 60 kilometers daily, a solid level of fitness is required to fully appreciate the breathtaking views of the majestic Alps.

The route is packed with scenic treasures, winding between sparkling lakes and towering peaks. Historic cities and charming villages provide the perfect places to rest, where the warm hospitality and exquisite local cuisine add to the charm of your cycling adventure.
