Old fishing village on the Baltic Sea

Sweden's largest island, also known as the "Pearl of the Baltic," is a true cyclist's paradise. With its rolling hills, idyllic coastal villages, and medieval ruins, it provides a picturesque setting for your next cycling adventure. Along the coast, well-marked cycle paths lead to historical sites such as Visby, a fortified Hanseatic town, and to breathtaking nature reserves that showcase Gotland's unique beauty. Are you ready to pack your bags?

You'll discover history and culture in Visby, the largest city on the island, before heading towards Kappelshamn. Along the way, you'll encounter not only the characteristic limestone pillars but also the spectacular Lummelunda Grotto. The following day, your adventure begins with an exploration of Fårö Island, renowned as the residence of director Ingmar Bergman and home to the intriguing Bergman Center.

Following an overnight stay in Slite, the route leads you to the charming fishing village of Grynge and onward to Ljugarn. The southern part of the island, within the Husrygg nature reserve, offers breathtaking views and unique flora. As you reach the west coast, you'll be treated to stunning vistas of the surrounding islands before cycling the final stage back to Visby via Klintehamn.

  • The Lummelunda Grotto on Gotland is a fascinating cave system with underground lakes and impressive stalactite formations. A guided tour through the grotto is highly recommended to delve into its mysterious underworld. Remember to wear warm clothing and sturdy shoes!
  • Fantastic nature reserves invite you to relax: Whether it's Langhammars, Husrygg, or Högklint, these nearly pristine areas provide stunning natural beauty, breathtaking panoramic views of the sea, and a chance to escape everyday life for a few precious moments..
  • The finest cuisine made from regional products: Gotland is not only known as the "Pearl of the Baltic", but also as a paradise for gourmets. First-class restaurants await you not only in Visby, but also in more remote corners of the island. Regional products are primarily used, and of course fresh fish is a must!

While the paths on Gotland are flat, you'll still need to pedal hard on stages up to 75 kilometers long. However, the stunning landscape makes it all worthwhile. Start your day right with a hearty breakfast at your accommodation to ensure you have the energy to explore the island to the fullest!

Those who associate this beautiful country primarily with furniture have yet to experience a cycling vacation in Sweden. The picturesque nature, relaxed lifestyle, and distinctive architecture make cyclists' pulses race, especially during the summer months.

Itinerary at a glance

Long beaches, historic buildings, and regional cuisine: Gotland is considered the pearl of the Baltic Sea! Along the way, you'll pass limestone columns, the Lummelunda Cave, and the Högklint Nature Reserve. The fishing village of Grundsund is particularly charming.

UNESCO world cultural heritage Visby welcomes you with many places of interest as well as an impressive city wall. Visit one of the numerous, exquisite restaurants and try a delicious lamm dish or fresh fish and finish with a typical Gotlandic saffron pancake with red berries and whipped cream.

Today you get to know the island from its inside! The 400 million years old Lummelunda cave can be visited during a guided tour (not included). Shorty afterwards, the “Jungfrun”, with its 27m the highest limestone rauk on Gotland is awaiting you, just before you reach the coast of Kappelshamn. Per transfer (ca. 35 km) you continue in direc-tion Fårö and your hotel.

You start with a loop tour to Fårö and nature reserve Langhammars, where most of the impressing limestone rauks are located. More than 10m high, are they dominating the sparse landscape around. Fårö also was residence of well-known regisseur Ingmar Bergman, the Bergman centre is giving interesting insights in the artistic achievements and life of the regisseur. Back on the “main land” the Bunge museum is worth a visit, the biggest open air museum on Gotland gives great insights into the Gotlandic farming life of earlier times. Today’s destination is the former trading town Slite.

Extensive sandy beaches, rauk fields and small, picturesque vil-lages are coining this part of the island. A short detour leads you to Grynge, one of the most beautiful and preserved fishing villages. 20 beach sheds from the 18th and 19th century are lined up there in a row.

The South of Gotland is the most fruitful area, its landscape is diver-sified and beautiful. Cycle down to the Southern tip (+45 km) and check out Hoburgsgubben, one of the most popular rauks, located in nature reserve Husrygg. Additionally you will be rewarded with stunning views over the sea.

From Burgsvik your bike route leads you to the West Coast of the island. The small coastal roads are trailing themselves along endless pebble beaches up to Djupvik, past windswept coastal forests and with awesome views onto offshore islands.

Start with a refreshing bath in the sea into your last bike day. Tofta beach is known as best sandy beach at the West Coast. Just before Visby, a stop in nature reserve Högklint is highly recommended, with stunning views onto the Baltic sea and Visby, the final destina-tion of your round trip.
