Through Transylvania and along the Carpathians
Transylvania, made famous by Dracula and shaped by the German influence of Siebenbürgen, is one of Europe’s great cultural landscapes that remains largely undiscovered. Its population forms an ethnic mosaic of Romanians, Hungarians, Germans, and Roma. You’ll cycle along the Carpathians, taking in spectacular views and passing through remote villages where time seems to have stood still. On some days, you'll encounter more horse-drawn carts than cars. You might even come across a street wedding with German brass bands, Romanian lyrics, Roma rhythms, and, of course, Tuika—the plum brandy as iconic to Transylvania as garlic. You’ll see numerous fortified churches of Siebenbürgen, which shape the landscape and are part of the UNESCO World Heritage. The cities of Brașov and Sibiu will also captivate you, along with the Renaissance Făgăraș Castle, Bran Castle (also known as Dracula’s Castle), and the citadel of Sighișoara, all part of the UNESCO World Heritage as well.
Hilly route, riding on side roads with little traffic, providing a safer and more enjoyable cycling experience.
