Two cyclists on a cycle path over serpentines into the Bay of Kotor

The picturesque coastal roads along the azure waters of the Adriatic are a feast for the senses, while charming towns like Kotor, Budva, and Herceg Novi, with their historic old towns, invite you to explore. Welcome to Montenegro, where mountain peaks and coastal regions seem to go hand in hand. A variety of cycling routes lead you through untouched nature and idyllic villages. You’ll also get an up-close experience of the flora and fauna in Durmitor National Park. The Balkan cuisine is equally exciting, offering daily homemade specialties to savor.

Your starting point, Žabljak, is already located in Durmitor National Park. This protected area offers alpine landscapes, glacier lakes, and dense forests. The first cycling stage focuses on exploring the national park, including the Black Lake and the Bogomil gravestones. Say farewell to the UNESCO World Heritage site as you cycle along the Tara Canyon and over the Tara Bridge to Mojkovac. A transfer to Virpazar is included in your travel package, passing through the Skadar Lake National Park along the way.

On Day 4, you’ll remain loyal to Lake Skadar, with your destination being the historic Cetinje, the former capital of the country. The following day, you’ll leave this charming town behind and cross the Lovćen National Park on your way to Kotor. The next day brings one of the most spectacular highlights of the tour, as you cycle to the Bay of Kotor. Stop at the Verige Strait to enjoy the view of the islands, then spend the evening in the charming town of Kotor. The final stage takes you to the stylish Tivat, where the rich and famous anchor their yachts. The Solila bird reserve and the Trojica Pass are also part of the journey, before you finally return to Tivat.

  • The Fjord-like Bay of Kotor: Surrounded by majestic mountains and steep cliffs, this stunning bay stretches for about 28 kilometers, branching into several smaller inlets, with the bays of Tivat and Risan being the most famous. Its breathtaking beauty has earned it UNESCO World Heritage status, preserving the bay and its surrounding landscape. Kotor, the bay's most renowned town, is enclosed by towering walls and is often hailed as one of the Adriatic's most beautiful ancient towns.
  • The largest lake in the Balkans: Spanning approximately 530 square kilometers, Lake Skadar offers a breathtaking backdrop, surrounded by majestic mountains and a rich diversity of flora and fauna. The lake's shores are lined with picturesque villages, expansive reed belts, and historic monasteries, including the renowned Ostrog Monastery and the ancient ruins of the town of Obod.
  • Explore the former capital Cetinje: The city exudes a relaxed atmosphere, inviting you to explore its narrow streets lined with ancient trees and cozy cafés. This charming town is renowned for its well-preserved historic buildings, including the remarkable Royal Palace and the Church of Saint John.

The stunning mountain landscapes of Durmitor National Park will be right at your feet throughout this journey, meaning you'll be conquering elevation gains each day. For the more challenging stages, a solid fitness level is recommended, though some difficult sections can be shortened if needed. Several transfers are included in the travel package.

The Balkans as a travel destination radiate a unique and captivating atmosphere. Often underestimated, yet offering so much to experience – a cycling vacation in Montenegro creates memories to last a lifetime.
