Panoramic view over vineyards and rolling hills to Collio

Discover this relatively unknown, but beautiful and varied holiday region in Italy by bike. The tour begins in the capital of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Udine, where you can enjoy Italy's ‘Dolce Vita’ on the very first evening. Other treats await you in the hilltop town of San Daniele, famous for the local ham, and the ‘mosaic town’ of Spilimbergo. Enjoy the holiday feeling of the Italian Adriatic, cycling by the sea. Architectural gems can be admired in Aquileia, Gradisca d'Isonzo and Cividale del Friuli. And don't miss out on a wine tasting in the stunning Collio wine region! Salute!

Udine marks both the starting and ending points of your Friuli loop tour. During the initial leg, you'll visit Castello di Colloredo di Monte Albano and pass through Fagagna before reaching San Daniele del Friuli, renowned for its famous prosciutto. Your journey continues to the mosaic-rich town of Spilimbergo, where you'll overnight in Codroipo.

On Day 4, your route takes you to the seaside and the delightful old town of Marano Lagunare where you can take a refreshing swim in the Adriatic. Passing through Cervignano del Friuli and the ancient Roman city of Aquileia, you'll arrive at the lagoon of Grado. Enjoy the briny aroma at the harbor, gaze at the waves from the promenade, and indulge in a creamy gelato. The following day, you'll cycle through a nature reserve, encountering a captivating variety of birdlife. The final stages lead you to Gradisca d'Isonzo before heading back to Udine.

  • The capital of Friuli Venezia Giulia: Whether it's the cathedral, the castle, or the Chiesa di San Giacomo, Udine offers a wealth of attractions to explore. Take in the Mediterranean atmosphere on Piazza Matteotti, observe the locals as they go about their daily lives, and savor regional delicacies at the bars and cafes.
  • The wines from the Collio: The northern regions of Italy are renowned in various places for their winemaking and the production of exquisite wines. As you near the Slovenian border, you'll venture into the Collio region, celebrated for its distinct climatic conditions and fertile soil. Don't miss the opportunity to sample a glass or two as you travel past the wineries along your route.
  • Roman excavations in Aquileia: Situated in close proximity to Grado, Aquileia provides a wealth of attractions that will engage not only history and archaeology aficionados but also anyone with an interest in the past. During the days of ancient Rome, the city played a prominent role as a trade hub. Today, you can delve into relics from bygone eras at locations such as the Basilica, the National Archaeological Museum, and the Roman Forum.

During a six-day journey through Friuli, you'll cycle approximately 320 kilometers. While you'll encounter some gently rolling terrain on occasion, the routes are mostly flat. When you choose Eurobike for your travel, our team offers thorough travel documents and route guidance, ensuring you can start your vacation with confidence.

Itinerary at a glance

Combine the authentic "dolce vita" inland with the holiday feeling of the Adriatic Sea, plus beautiful towns and sights to see - these are the ingredients for a successful tour and exploration of Friuli-Venezia-Giulia.

Welcome to the capital of the Friuli-Venice-Giulia region! Experience the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy your first evening in ‚Bella Italia‘.

Joining the renowned Alpe-Adria cycle route, you leave the city and pedal north for the first kilometres. The impressive mountain ranges of the Carnic Alps reign over the gently rolling countryside, with wonderful panoramas opening on all sides.  From the Castello di Colloredo di Monte Albano, enjoy a breathtaking view over the lowlands, before cycling further through the medieval town of Fagagna. In Daniele del Friuli, famous for the ham, you will be amazed by the imposing cathedral and bell tower in the picturesque old town.

Hotel (example): Hotel San Daniele

After breakfast, leave the hilltop town and head towards the Tagliamento river. This alpine river, shimmering in all possible colours, forms a unique landscape with poplars, alders and willows. At a narrow point, you cross it over on an impressive bridge before you take a break in the beautiful old town of Spilimbergo, the city of mosaic arts. The route continues leisurely further through typical Italian villages to Codroipo.

Hotel (example): Hotel Nodo

Directly outside the town of Codroipo, marvel at Villa Manin, the summer residence of the last Venetian Doge, before heading through the countryside and along the Tagliamentos riverside cycle path towards the coast. In Latisana, founded in Roman times, with its large number of sacred buildings, you can already smell the sea. A few kilometres further on, you can gaze upon the view of the lagoon. In Marano Lagunare, stroll through the small streets of the picturesque old town in the evening. Occasionally an overnight stay in Lignano is also possible.

Hotel (example): Hotel Jolanda

Cycling along the lagoon, you will reach Cervignano del Fruili and on to Aquileia, known for its medieval basilica and Roman archaeological site – designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998. After exploring here, you cycle on the Alpe-Adria cycle route to the offshore island and the lagoon city of Grado. Enjoy a swim in the Adriatic Sea and find dinner among the winding streets of the old town.

Hotel (example): Hotel Fonzari

You leave Grado along the lagoon and cycle through a protected landscape by the sea. Observe the rich bird-life and feel the sea breeze before heading back inland. Near the Slovenian border, you will stay overnight in the historical town of Gradisca d'Isonzo. Stroll through the city streets, home to 6,000 inhabitants, (it is a member of the "I borghi più belli d'Italia", the most beautiful villages in Italy), and end the evening comfortably with a glass of wine in a restaurant.

Hotel (example): Hotel Franz

The border with Slovenia is getting closer and closer as you cycle north; the vineyards of the famous Collio area are getting bigger and bigger, as are your eyes, because these vineyard-covered hills seem like something out of a picture book! Take the opportunity to taste the wine produced here directly at a winemaker. There are plenty of wonderful places to stop here. Before returning to the starting point in Udine, you should plan a stop in Cividale del Fruili. Stroll through the narrow streets, take a picture of the Devil's Bridge and take a look inside the cathedral. There is a lot to discover!
