Thuringian City Chain

5 Days / 4 Nights

The Wartburg in Eisenach

The ”Thüringer Städtekette” long distance cycle path connects the four most beautiful towns of Thuringia. At the same time, you can cycle through high contrast forest, meadow and river landscapes. This route leads you from the city of Eisenach via Gotha to cathedral city Erfurt. Afterwards you continue to Weimar, where you can follow in the footsteps of Schiller and Goethe. But there are not only beautiful cities awaiting you on this tour – an awesome and diversified landscape is accompanying you too.

Immerse yourself in culture as you arrive in Eisenach. Explore the Wartburg Castle and walk in the footsteps of Johann Sebastian Bach before you hop on your bike. Following the Hörsel River and traversing the Thuringian Basin, you'll cycle approximately 40 kilometers to Gotha. This section of the city chain also offers a wealth of cultural treasures awaiting your discovery.

On Day 3, picturesque villages, majestic castles, and medieval architecture will guide your journey from Gotha to Erfurt. Passing through beautifully maintained parks, you'll reach the historic trading city, where the iconic Krämerbrücke and the Cathedral stand as its landmarks. In the evening, enjoy a leisurely stroll through charming alleys lined with delightful half-timbered houses. The final stage, the shortest of your cycling tour, leads you through lush natural landscapes before you roll into Weimar, the City of the Classics.

  • A stroll through Weimar's historic old town: Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Schiller called Weimar their home. The city's literary and cultural heritage is immense, with landmarks at every turn. The Duchess Anna Amalia Library, a UNESCO World Heritage site, impresses with its magnificent interior and extensive collection of historical works. Be sure to visit the Weimar City Palace, the monumental Buchenwald Memorial, and the charming Tiefurt Park.
  • Wonderful views from the Drei Gleichen: Near Erfurt, you'll pass by the Wachsenburg, Altenburg, and Gleichen castles, each offering a glimpse into the region's history of defense. At the largest of the three, Gleichen Castle, you can explore the well-preserved structures surrounding the keep, all while enjoying breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
  • Enjoy the idyll of the Thuringian Forest: The landscape of this vast natural area welcomes you with its picturesque diversity. The wide network of cycling paths winds through dense forests and rolling hills, offering breathtaking views. Along the way, take a break at one of the many Thüringian taverns to savor local specialties, from bratwurst to beer.

The landscape in Thuringia, which is exciting for cyclists, is complemented by exceptional cultural heritage and excellent infrastructure. Each stage covers a maximum of 40 kilometers, with a few hilly sections adding variety and offering spectacular views. Our experienced team will take care of not only your route planning and any questions you may have but also the transfer of your luggage between accommodations.

Castles, palaces, and half-timbered houses meet picturesque rivers and woodlands – the perfect combination for a cycling vacation in Central Germany. For a charming contrast to the gentle hills, a cycling tour in Northern Germany offers a unique experience.

Itinerary at a glance

The tranquility of the Thuringian Forest meets culture and history along the route through four cities. You'll follow in the footsteps of Bach, Luther, Goethe, and Schiller. In the old trading city of Erfurt, you'll find the Severikirche and the Krämerbrücke dominating the scene.

You should come early to have enough time for sightseeing in the historic city of Eisenach. Famous persons like Johann Sebastian Bach or Martin Luther King have lived here.

Following the course of the Hörsel, today you cycle mostly on small roads through the Thuringian basin. Wide fields line the route before you reach the well-preserved Art Nouveau complex of the Boxberg racecourse with its famous restaurant, just in time for lunch. From there, it is not far to the royal seat of Gotha, so you will have plenty of time in the afternoon to visit Friedenstein Palace with its built-in Ekhof Theatre and stroll around the main market square, which is well worth seeing.

New destinations lure you into the saddle today: in the morning you reach the village of Wechmar, which was voted ‘Thuringia's most beautiful village’ in 2003 and is famous for its Bach ancestral home (museum). Soon afterwards, the striking trio of castles, Wachsenburg, Mühlburg and Gleichen Castle, known as the Drei Gleichen, lie before you on the edge of the road. Not far from this castle ensemble, one of the oldest restaurants in Thuringia invites you to take a break before you follow the course of the Gera in the afternoon and are led through the most beautiful parks directly into the centre of the old trading town of Erfurt. The striking cathedral with the Severi church stands out from this medieval jewel and the Krämerbrücke (Merchants' Bridge) is the landmark of this city, which is well worth seeing.

The Thuringian Chain of Cities delivers what it promises! After a rather short day's stage, you roll into the classic city of Weimar and can follow in the footsteps of Goethe and Schiller, visit the Residential Palace and Bauhaus Museum, the National Theatre or relax in the park on the Ilm. One thing is certain: you won't be bored!
