Three cyclists between vineyards, in the background villages, hills and wind turbines

German Tuscany or home of emperors and kings - you can choose the name for the Palatinate and we will provide you with a route that combines the best of this region. Think picturesque wine villages, towns full of art and culture, unique nature and great cuisine that combines hearty fare with French influences. With Speyer and Worms you will explore two of the three Rhenish imperial cathedral cities and in Heidelberg student flair meets extraordinary architecture.

The first stage leads from Neustadt an der Weinstraße to Speyer and Heidelberg. On day 3, you will first catch sight of the half-timbered houses in Ladenburg, before the vines are replaced by lush green forests and the day comes to an end in the cathedral city of Worms. Visit Herrnsheim Castle, take a look at the inner courtyard of St. Martin's Church and enjoy an ice cream at Vannini's on the market square.

The last days of your tour are spent in Germany's second largest wine-growing region. The picturesque towns along the Wine Route as well as the castles and palaces exude the special charm of the Palatinate, while the sun-kissed vines whet your appetite for nature.

  • Speyer Cathedral: As the burial place of emperors and kings, the largest Romanesque church still standing is more than worth a visit. And yet Speyer has many other highlights up its sleeve: the Technology Museum, the Trinity Church or the Rhine bank promenade with numerous opportunities to stroll and enjoy.
  • Idyll along the arms of the Altrhein: Islands, peninsulas, meadows and lakes now form the Altrhein, which has been reclaimed by nature in many places after the straightening of one of the busiest waterways in the world.
  • As a student city with the oldest university in Germany, life pulsates in Heidelberg. The numerous cafés, restaurants and bars, where it is worth stopping off, also bear witness to this. Get yourself a ‘Studentenkuss’ and follow in the footsteps of countless romantics at the Liebesstein (Love Stone) next to the Alte Brücke (Old Bridge). Grandiose views are to be had on the Philosophenweg.
  • Small winegrowing villages along the Wine Route: Soak up the unique flair during a visit to the numerous winegrowers in the world's largest Riesling-growing region. Be sure to try the typical Pfälzer Saumagen, the "Keschde" or a tarte flambée with regional figs.

The Palatinate scores points for its mild climate with lots of sunshine and Mediterranean atmosphere. You will cover around 160 km along the Rhine and the Wine Route and have plenty of time to explore the beauty of the region.

Itinerary at a glance

Timber-framed houses, almond blossoms, kiwi harvests? The region around Speyer, Heidelberg and Worms has a Mediterranean feel, and the history of the Nibelungen saga and the empire continues to shape the Palatinate region to this day. Winemaking villages and vineyards round off the countryside.

Your holiday starts with a tour information meeting and bike fitting. Afterwards, you will have enough time for an evening stroll through the pretty old town of Neustadt.
