The Lüneburg Heath

Lüneburg Heath

Heidschnucke and blooming nature

8 Days / 7 Nights
Medium
The Lüneburg Heath

Expansive heathlands, gentle hills, and forested areas define the Lüneburg Heath, where cycling feels almost romantic. Towns like Celle and Soltau invite you to take thorough explorations, while the sight of Heidschnucken sheep and the vast landscapes promises pure relaxation. Keep an eye out for the blooming heather (Calluna vulgaris) during your journey; in late summer, the region transforms into a sea of purple blossoms. The eight-day cycling holiday is also highly recommended in spring and autumn.

The journey begins in the charming town of the same name, where a warm welcome invites you to enjoy a leisurely first stroll. Then, it's time to hop on your bike and pedal through tranquil heath landscapes, passing picturesque villages until you reach the artsy town of Uelzen after your first stage. The route continues through stunning countryside to the enchanting town of Celle, with its fairytale-like old town filled with half-timbered houses and the majestic Celle Castle. On day 4, cycle along the peaceful Örtze River, immersed in the serene beauty of nature, before reaching your next overnight stop in the quiet village of Hermannsburg.

The stage destination, Soltau, offers a host of attractions, with the Heide Park being the standout. The route from Soltau to Schneverdingen is rich in history, and along the way, you'll encounter a typical heath church in Wolterdingen. As the journey nears its end, you'll explore the North Heath. Cycling past herds of the famous Heidschnucken sheep and over the “Wilseder Berg,” you'll make your way back to Lüneburg, taking in the scenic beauty along the way.

  • The artistic train station in Uelzen: The Hundertwasser House in Vienna is widely renowned for its unique architecture. Less well-known but equally beautiful is Hundertwasser's work at the Uelzen train station. The station features many typical elements, such as colorful mosaics, irregular shapes, golden onion domes, wavy floors, and green rooftops.
  • Panoramic views of the heathland: The "Wilseder Berg" mountain ridge, towering at 169 meters, is the highest peak in the region. Once you've ascended this impressive summit, you'll be rewarded with sweeping, awe-inspiring vistas that stretch across the entire landscape, offering a view like no other.
  • Half-timbered houses and castles in Celle: The Old Town of Celle is one of the largest and best-preserved half-timbered ensembles in Europe, with over 400 half-timbered houses dating from the 16th to the 19th century. Be sure to visit the castle and the French Garden, where magnificent flower beds and historic statues invite you to enjoy relaxing walks.

Founded in 1921, the Lüneburg Heath is Germany's first and oldest nature park, where the country’s gentle side unfolds. The "Wilseder Berg," as previously mentioned, offers the highest challenge for cyclists, but it's all worth it. Along the way, you'll glide through charming forest paths and soft, sandy trails. Each day, you'll cycle between 35 and 65 kilometers, with every turn bringing you closer to the peaceful beauty of this enchanting region.

Unique natural areas, sometimes rugged charm, and yet always warm hospitality – cycling vacations in Northern Germany continuously reveal new, captivating aspects. One thing you can always count on, though, is the absence of challenging climbs.
