Family cycling at a lake in Bavaria

This tour along the luminous green Isar, past mountains and lakes and packed with adventures for young and old, offers a short, but all the more relaxing break for the whole family. Let yourself be carried away by the extraordinary nature along the river, which rises in the Tyrolean Alps and flows into the Danube near Deggendorf. You will cycle around 110 of the approx. 300 km long cycle path.

The starting and finishing point of the 5-day tour with Eurobike is Lake Starnberg. Enjoy a swim in the cool lake before the tour begins. The first stage leads to Murnau am Staffelsee, passing the enchanting nature reserve of the Osterseen.

In Murnau, it's worth taking a stroll through the great old town; be sure to invite your kids for an ice cream. On the way to Kochelsee, you will pass the Schwaiganger stud farm. Take a short break with a view of the animals, the kids will thank you. Via Benediktbeuern Abbey, the tour continues to Bad Tölz, home of a famous German TV show. Finally, the tour leads back to Lake Starnberg.

  • Bavarian delicacies and hospitality: One of the most beautiful characteristics of the Bavarians is their unwavering hospitality. You are welcomed with open arms and delicious treats. Whether knuckle of pork or roast pork, Schupfnudeln or dumplings, apple strudel or Krapfen - the regional cuisine is certainly hearty and the perfect end to a long day of cycling. Of course, you can also find lighter and vegetarian alternatives.
  • Breathtaking panoramas at countless mountain lakes: Here, the gateway to the Alps literally opens up and you enjoy outstanding views along the entire route. Always have your camera handy, because there will be no shortage of photo opportunities. You will especially remember the romantic sunsets for a long time as a family.
  • Visit the tranquil Lake Sylvenstein: Canada? New Zealand? No, but at Lake Sylvenstein you might think you've travelled halfway around the world - no traffic in sight, turquoise-green water and untouched, even wild nature. Not only is it a great place to swim, but the hikes are also very family-friendly because the mountains are not so high.
  • Bathing fun at Lake Starnberg and wonderful views of the Zugspitze: Bavaria's second largest lake not only scores with numerous bathing spots, but is also a true Mecca for water sports enthusiasts. Whether stand-up paddling or a pedal boat ride - fun and action are guaranteed here!

The Isar Cycle Path is one of the most family-friendly cycle routes in Bavaria. The almost entirely flat route is a pleasure for the whole family. The stage lengths leave plenty of time for exploring the region.

Itinerary at a glance

The glistening water of Lake Starnberg, Lake Kochel and the Osterseen (a group of over 20 lakes) is very inviting for a swim and a break by the lake’s edge. Bavarians love their cuisine and will spoil you with their delicacies such as Schupfnudeln (a type of dumpling similar to gnocchi), roast pork or apple strudel.

Arrive at Lake Starnberg and move into your accommodation. The travel documents and the rental bikes (if booked) are in your hotel.

Hotel (example): Landhotel Huber am See

Fresh and raring to go, you will start your cycle tour in Bavaria along the edge of Lake Starnberg. Then you will continue cycling through the nature protection area “Osterseen” (Easter Lakes) where 19 small lakes form a unique highland moor area. A true free time paradise, which invites you to go for a swim. Next, you cycle past one of Bavaria’s warmest Lakes – the lake Froschhauser and then you will arrive in Murnau. There is enough time for you to have a look at one of the museums or to wonder through the colourful old town.

Hotel (example): Hotel Angerbräu

You say Murnau with his beautiful town square "goodbye" and let's go. Passing the Murnauer Moos and the famous horse stud Schwaiganger, the Kochelsee soon appears. The Franz Marc Museum is particularly recommendable here!

Hotel example: Alpenhof Postillon

A stage with a lot of time to enjoy. After just a few kilometers through the Kocheler Moos, the shady beer garden of the Benediktbeuern Abbey invites you to take a first rest. Afterwards there is a lot to see in Bad Tölz! Two old trade routes have made the city rich, as the beautifully decorated town houses on marketstreet show.

Hotel example: Hotel am Wald

At the end of your cycle tour, you head back to the second largest lake in Bavaria. If you haven’t already, you should take a break in a shady beer garden today and try out the regional Bavarian food. Once you have arrived at the lake side, you can relax wonderfully. Take a boat ride across the lake or enjoy one of the tasty homemade pastries in one of the many cafes. Maybe you will spot one of the celebs that often head to lake Starnberg.

difficulty level

Challenging

You mainly cycle along cycle paths and quiet side roads. Between Wallgau and Fall there is a longer section on slightly busier roads. The cycle stages are between 30 and 40 kilometres long, the topography ranges from flat to hilly, with some longer climbs in places. We recommend that children have a good basic level of fitness and good cycling skills (including safety in traffic).
