City view of Passau

The blue Danube invites you to embark on a multifaceted journey - over eight days, you will explore the section from beautiful Donauwörth to the Mediterranean-inspired Passau. You will pass the UNESCO World Heritage city of Regensburg and marvel at Weltenburg Abbey. Stop off at the brewery, as it is the oldest monastery brewery in the world. Of course, Bavaria has much more culinary delights on offer - enjoy yourself!

The tour starts in beautiful Donauwörth, where history revolves around trade on the Danube. From here, you cycle through the hills of the Franconian Alb to Ingolstadt. The next day, you cycle to Kelheim, passing through the tranquil Danube floodplains and Abensberg. A special highlight is Weltenburg Abbey on the Danube gorge, then you return to Kelheim by boat and continue cycling to Regensburg.

On the stage to Straubing, you pass the imposing Walhalla memorial and follow the Danube in sweeping loops. The journey continues to Deggendorf and finally to the Bavarian city of three rivers. In Passau, there are many sights worth seeing and numerous cafes and restaurants - an extensive exploration tour or even an additional stay is worthwhile!

  • Listen to the largest organ in Europe: St. Stephen's Cathedral in Passau is an impressive sight in itself. Nestled in the beautiful old town of the city of three rivers, its white baroque façade is a real feast for the eyes. Take a leisurely stroll along the Danube and Inn rivers and enjoy the panoramic views from the Veste Oberhaus or the Mariahilf monastery.
  • The view of Weltenburg Abbey from the ship: The ancient monastery in Bavaria stands out with its stunning baroque architecture situated on the banks of the Danube gorge. Its magnificent monastery church is a must-see attraction, and don't miss the chance to taste the renowned Weltenburg beer.
  • Regensburg has many sights to discover! The medieval old town, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is an absolute must-see. Explore St. Peter's Cathedral, the Stone Bridge, and the Old Town Hall. Wander through the narrow streets and soak in the historic charm of this city nestled along the Danube.

Cycling along the Danube is a wonderful experience! The Danube cycle path is one of the most popular long-distance cycling routes in Europe, and for good reason—the route along the river is flat, and the surrounding nature is fascinating. A boat excursion to Weltenburg Abbey and a visit to the Mobile Museum in Ingolstadt provide great variety, and both are included in your tour.

You have a multitude of options for a cycling vacation along the Danube. The Danube Cycle Path winds through beautiful landscapes and picturesque towns and cities—explore our various travel options to find the perfect fit for you.

Itinerary at a glance

Enjoy the scenery and look forward to the urban gems of Ingolstadt, Regensburg, and Passau. At Weltenburg Monastery, you board a ship, and at the Hundertwasser Brewery Kuchlbauer, a refreshing beer awaits you.

Your tour begins in the beautiful city Donauwörth, where the former most important trade route between Nürnberg and Augsburg crosses over the Danube. Booked rental bicycles will be available for collection at your hotel.

You will once again speed along today’s route on good quality surfaces. Just before Marxheim you will come to the foothills of the Franconian Jura which will introduce some small hills to your cycle. Don’t miss a visit to the old town of Neuburg before continuing on towards Ingolstadt. The Museum Mobile is worth a visit. Or why not take a stroll through the old town within the old fortified walls.

The tour usually takes you directly through the Danube meadows along the river to Bad Gögging. From here it is only a few kilometres to Abensberg. The small town has an endearingly renovated historic old town. You should not miss the beer garden of the Hundertwasser brewery Kuchlbauer.

First you cycle to the Weltenburg monastery. From there it's back by boat to Kelheim. Today’s route leads you to Regensburg, the most northerly point of the Danube and the best preserved city in Germany, a world cultural monument by UNESCO.

You should take your first break of the day at the Walhalla Temple near Donaustauf. Your trip then continues on along the Danube which curves along the broad, flat landscape in generous meanders. You will pass Wörth Castle and find yourself in the middle of the so-called “Gäuboden” landscape. Today`s destination is the town of Straubing, which looks back on a Celtic and Roman past and has a distinctive town tower.

Today you will firstly cycle through Bogen, which attained fame in 1104 when a statue of a pregnant Madonna was found. You will then continue on through Pfelling and Mariaposching and on to the Benedictine Abbey of Metten, before coming to Deggendorf, the gateway to the Bavarian Forest.

In no time at all you will reach your destination, the three-river city and former diocesan town of Passau. Take time to discover the Danube, Inn and Ilz on a boat trip and round off your holiday with a stroll through the old town or a visit to the Feste Oberhaus Fortress.

After breakfast you may return home or extend your stay.
