Three cyclists in front of the Brandenburg Gate in Berli

Hamburg – Berlin

From the port metropolis to the capital

Three cyclists in front of the Brandenburg Gate in Berli

This cycling holiday connects two German cities that couldn't be more exciting, multifaceted, and different. While Hamburg boasts its unique character with its harbor, the Elbphilharmonie concert hall, and the Reeperbahn, Berlin captivates with its history at Checkpoint Charlie, Alexanderplatz, and the Brandenburg Gate. In between, vast landscapes, stately castles, and tranquil lakes await your exploration.

Embark on your cycling journey at Hamburg Landungsbrücken, where countless adventures have begun amidst breathtaking scenery. Cycling along the Elbe, your first destination is Lauenburg, known for its timber-framed buildings, before traversing the Elbe valley meadows to Hitzacker. Continuing onward, you'll pass through Wittenberge and arrive at Havelberg, where you'll transition from the Elbe to the Havel cycle path.

On day 6, you'll cycle through the Westhavelland Nature Park to Rathenow. After a detour to one of the bathing spots in the lake district, you'll arrive at the city of Brandenburg. Gradually making your way toward the federal capital, the route first leads you to Potsdam via Werder. Enjoy a ferry ride across the Wannsee, and before long, you'll reach Berlin-Mitte!

  • Maritime flair in Hamburg: As Germany's second-largest city, the port metropolis has much to offer. From the historic town hall to the modern Elbphilharmonie concert hall, Hamburg is a city of contrasts. Explore the harbor by boat and take a leisurely stroll through the Speicherstadt.
  • Pure nature in Westhavelland: Brandenburg's largest national park is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna - and heavenly tranquillity. Speaking of the sky! Sternpark Westhavelland is Germany's first star park.
  • Berlin, a melting pot of nations and cultures: Creative, lively, and colorful - the German capital captivates people from all over the world. During your visit, indulge in the diverse gastronomic scene and explore classic attractions like the Berlin Wall or the Reichstag building.

Over the course of ten days, you'll cycle along the Elbe, the Havel, and the Spree near Berlin, getting to know the diversity of the northern part of the country. Each day's journey covers between 40 and 80 kilometers, so a bit of endurance is required. The routes are mostly flat, and the numerous sights and natural beauties provide a refreshing change.

Whether it's the Baltic Sea or the North Sea, the Berlin Lakes region or along the Weser River - cycling tours in Northern Germany are not just an option, but an excellent choice!

Itinerary at a glance

First the Elbe, then the Havel – these two rivers will guide you from Hamburg to Berlin. Along the way, you'll encounter half-timbered houses in Lauenburg and Hitzacker, the Westhavelland Nature Park, the lake area near Brandenburg, and the magnificent city of Potsdam.

After your arrival, you have the opportunity to explore the Hanseatic city on a harbour tour or a walk along the gangplanks.

From Hamburg with its port and the ‚Reeperbahn‘ your initial stage takes you along the river Elbe to Lauenburg. You cycle on the dyke directly into the shipping town featuring many half-timbered houses from the 16th and 17th century.

Today’s cycle route leads through the Elbtal-wetlands and the Wendland to Hitzacker, one of the most attractive towns on the German Half-Timbered Road. The little historic centre with its many half-timbered houses invites you for a stroll and to linger.

Through the Wendland you cycle today along the dyke to Wittenberge. En route you cycle past the former inner-German border area..

After leaving the city of towers Wittenberge behind you, you cycle along the dyke to Havelberg. In between, the Elbe cycle path takes you through Rühstädt, the village with the largest stork population in Germany.

From today you accompany the river Havel through the green fields and small villages of the Schollener Land. You cycle through the Westhavelland Nature Park and end the stage in the town of Rathenow.

Today be sure to pack your swimming things, since you cycle through the lake area located North-West of the city of Brandenburg. The city itself is spread across several islands and peninsulas to explore.

Today’s route takes you first on dyke paths across wide open land. We recommend you plan some time for the island town of Werder and for Caputh Palace (as a detour). In the afternoon you cycle along the idyllic promenade of Lake Templin to Potsdam.

In the morning you cross the Glienicker Bridge from Potsdam to Berlin. You cross the lake Großer Wannsee by ferry. Via Berlin-Spandau you now reach the centre of Berlin along the Spree cycle path.
