Altmühltal Nature Park

Altmühl Valley and Danube

Loop tour with start in Regensburg

8 Days / 7 Nights
Medium
Altmühltal Nature Park

On this cycling holiday, you will get to know the main Danube canal and the most beautiful section of the Altmühltal, with the famous rock formations. You can ride leisurely along the idyllic Danube and explore the diverse region. It is particularly relaxed within the little-travelled Wellheim dry valley, created by the Danube before it changed its course. Take a boat trip at the Danube Gorge and enjoy the thermal springs at Bad Gögging. Roman influence can be felt in the Vetonian Roman fort, whilst the town of Beilngries still exudes medieval charm. One of the most magnificent Renaissance castles lies in Neuburg on your route. The hustle and bustle of the larger towns invite you for a city stroll. Whether in Regensburg, Ingolstadt or Eichstätt, discover the sights and the culinary specialities!

This cycling holiday begins in Regensburg. From the city, you cycle up the Danube past Kelheim to the mouth of the Altmühltal river, where you take a boat through the Danube Gorge to Weltenburg monastery. The destination for the night is Abensberg or Bad Gögging. The next day, you cycle to Ingolstadt and Neuburg, before travelling from the Danube to the Altmühltal, and arriving in Eichstätt. The next stage point is Beilngries. Finally, we travel along the main Danube canal to Kelheim and back again to Regensburg.

  • Regensburg: Retaining some its original flair, the city of Regensburg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A landmark to visit is the stone bridge, 310m long and built in the 12th century.
  • Danube Gorge: The famous Danube Gorge, a pinch point within the Danube valley, is recognised as a geotope and protected nature reserve.
  • Bad Gögging: This Is the only health resort in Bavaria to have three state-recognised natural remedies. In addition to the natural mud and sulphur water, there is also mineral thermal water. The thermal springs were even popular in Roman times!
  • Ingolstadt: Here, the charm of an old fortress town is combined with the modern influence of the world-famous Audi factory. Sightseeing is just as worthwhile here as shopping and a culinary journey.

This cycle tour is composed of several stages with a medium difficulty level. You mostly use cycle paths that are well maintained and have a good surface. There you do not need to pay attention to traffic; you can pedal in peace and enjoy the wonderful landscape.
