The Munsterkerk in Roermond, the Netherlands

Aachen Stroll Tour

Two rivers, three countries

7 Days / 6 Nights

The Munsterkerk in Roermond, the Netherlands

Explore the border regions of the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany from Aachen on a seven-day bike tour with Eurobike. You'll pass charming villages and picturesque landscapes, diverse river systems, and vibrant university towns. Along the way, you'll see castles and palaces, enjoy cozy taverns, and end your journey with the awe-inspiring experience of an underground cave system. Our leisurely tours are especially easy to manage and offer a delightful vacation combining pleasant activity with relaxation.

Aachen remains one of Germany's hidden gems, despite being a UNESCO World Heritage site. Your journey begins with a train ride to Eschweiler. From there, you'll cycle along the Inde and Rur rivers, passing through a former coal mining area, until you reach Jülich. Your next stop is Effeld, where you can splash around in the local swimming lake and relax by the shore.

On Day 4, you'll cross into the Netherlands and arrive in the charming city of Roermond before following the Meuse to Maaseik in Belgium. The next day, you'll be surrounded by beautiful river landscapes as you head to Maastricht—did you know that the EU was founded here in 1992? The final stretch of your journey returns you to Aachen, but there's still much to explore along the way. The Zuid-Limburg region is captivating, featuring castles and palaces, and culminating in a visit to the stunning Fluweelen Grotto in the Geul Valley.

  • Maastricht captivates with its historic old town, the impressive St. Servatius Basilica, and the Gothic Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe Church. Stroll through charming alleyways, vibrant squares like the Vrijthof, and immerse yourself in the city's lively cultural scene. Explore the renowned Maastricht University and enjoy the lively atmosphere of the many pubs and bars where students gather.
  • Subterranean cave worlds near Valkenburg: The Fluweelen Grotto was formed through the extraction of marl, a soft limestone that has been used in the region since Roman times. The extensive underground passages have been dug and expanded over the centuries, and today you can explore them. As you wander through, you'll encounter impressive murals, inscriptions, and sculptures depicting various historical and religious scenes, showcasing the cave's long history of use.
  • The view of the lignite works from the Indemann: Lignite has been mined at the Inden open-cast mine since the 1950s. As coal mining decreases, parts of the former open-cast mine are being rehabilitated and transformed into new, natural landscapes. These restoration efforts include the creation of lakes, woodlands, and recreational areas.

Enjoy leisurely cycling with a blend of relaxation, culture, and history around Aachen and Maastricht. Each day involves covering a maximum of 50 kilometers, and the terrain is mostly flat. Don’t forget to pack your swimwear, as rivers and various gravel pits invite refreshing dips. Our experienced team will handle (almost) everything else, such as the daily transfer of your luggage between accommodations.

The Netherlands is a perennial favorite for cycling enthusiasts—perhaps due to its picturesque landscapes, historic cities, beautiful tulips, or delicious cheese. Discover more about our cycling tours in Holland!

Itinerary at a glance

The cathedral city of Aachen, the university city of Maastricht, and the charming Old Rekem are only a few of the stops along the leisurely Three-Country Tour. Look forward to taking a swim in the Effelder Waldsee and visiting Daelenbrook Castle.

Look forward to the old cathedral city of Aachen and the famous Aachen Cathedral (UNESCO World Heritage Site) and savour the famous "Aachener Printen".

Take a leisurely train ride to Eschweiler, where you hop on your bike and follow the small Inde river. At the foot of the Goldstein hilltop, it's worth taking a detour up to the Indemann, whose viewing platform offers spectacular views of the neighbouring open-cast lignite mine "Inden". Your flat cycle stage leads directly along the edge of the mining area! Passing the idyllic Lucherberger lake, you reach the lively little river Rur, which takes you to Jülich with its citadel.

How beautiful! A whole day awaits you on the varied Rur-Ufer cycle path! Here, wide open farmland alternates with small villages. You cycle along the well-signposted flat cycle path, mostly directly alongside the idyllic course of the river. Some quarry ponds along the way tempt you to take a break for a swim - including the Effelder Waldsee. It offers a lovely terrace for excursions in the immediate vicinity of the hotel.

You quickly cross the border and cycle along the most beautiful Dutch cycle paths. Daelenbrook Castle and the Romanesque basilica in Sankt Odilienberg lie along the way before you reach the mouth of the Rhine in the old Hanseatic city of Roermond. Marvel at the many listed buildings in the city centre, dominated by the cathedral. A stroll through the enchanting pedestrian zone is a highlight of this journey. From now on, the navigable Meuse will be your new companion. You cycle along embankment paths and well-maintained cycle paths through this varied water landscape to the white town of Thorn with its listed village centre and beautiful abbey church. Now it's not far to the hotel in Maaseik in Belgium. You will have cycled through three countries in one day!

Along the Meuse, you will cross the national border again and again as you cycle through the narrowest part of the Netherlands, which is only 4.8 kilometres wide here. Marvel at the oxbow lakes, nature reserves and the many Meuse lakes, which offer a variety of water sports. The heart of this special cycling region beats here with its beautiful cafés and beer gardens. In the afternoon, the picturesque church village of "Oud-Rekem", which was voted the "most beautiful village in Flanders" in 2008, beckons before you reach the medieval university city of Maastricht. Stroll through the historic city centre, which is home to around 1500 monuments, and marvel at the Gothic St. John's Church (Sint Janskerk).

Today you leave the familiar river landscape and cycle through the slightly hilly Zuid-Limburg. Look forward to the tourist centre of the southernmost region of the Netherlands. Marvel at the historic towns, old half-timbered houses, watermills, castles, fortresses and country estates. There are always romantic places to stop for a bite to eat! Cycle through the narrow valley of the Geul to Valkenburg with its extensive system of tunnels in the Fluweelen Grotto, before cycling back to Aachen via Vaals.
