La Roque-Gageac on the banks of the Dordogne

Embark on a journey by bicycle through the captivating Périgord and the picturesque Dordogne. These regions lure you in with their fascinating history, spanning from prehistoric marvels to medieval fortresses. Follow the meandering river, wander through quaint villages, and indulge in the local delicacies - including the finest wines. The enchanting Dordogne Valley promises a tranquil getaway, where relaxation reigns supreme!

For the initial leg of the journey, trace the Dordogne River from Mouleydier or Bergerac until it meets the Vézère River. This route offers a diverse experience: in Eyzies de Tayac, you'll walk in the footsteps of the Neanderthals, while in Sarlat, you'll journey back to the Middle Ages.

On day 4, the picturesque town center of Sarlat serves as the launching pad for a tour focused on historic fortifications, whether it's Monfort Castle or the Bastide Domme. As you journey back through the Dordogne valley, you'll encounter a succession of majestic castles before circling back to your starting point. Cap off the stage with a tour through the vineyards surrounding Bergerac, culminating at the Château de Monbazillac on the final day of your eight-day cycling adventure - raise a glass of wine in celebration!

  • Cool off and have fun swimming in the rivers: In addition to exploring the Dordogne, your journey also winds along the Vézère. At the convergence of these rivers lies a charming basin, perfect for a refreshing swim amidst picturesque surroundings. If swimming isn't your preference, lay out a towel and simply bask in the beauty of the scenery.
  • Picturesque views of the mills in the Couze Valley: Renowned for its scenic splendor and storied past, the valley unfolds gracefully beside the river. Mills, integral to the regional economy, once hummed with activity, grinding grain, pressing oil, and processing various agricultural goods. Today, numerous mills have been meticulously restored, welcoming visitors to explore their history. Some continue to function, providing glimpses into traditional craftsmanship and offering a captivating journey into the past.
  • On the trail of the Neanderthals: Eyzies-de-Tayac is renowned for its prehistoric caves and remarkable paintings, which rank among the oldest and most significant in the world. This region serves as a vital hub for the study of human history, boasting numerous prehistoric sites, including the renowned Lascaux Cave.

Be prepared to summon your stamina for the somewhat undulating route; the stages can be rightly described as ambitious. Daily distances range from 30 to 80 kilometers, and specific sections can be adjusted to suit your preferences, whether you prefer to shorten or extend your ride. Our local team will offer plenty of tips and fascinating insights into this beautiful region, ensuring you experience the land and its people in a truly unique way from the saddle of your bike!

Imagine enchanting châteaux, vibrant natural landscapes, and exquisite cuisine - embarking on a cycling tour in France isn't merely about physical activity; it's about indulging in enjoyment every step of the way!

Itinerary at a glance

The Périgord region with its castles, caves, and medieval villages is simply enchanting. Take a swim at the confluence of the Vézère and Dordogne rivers, visit the Château de Commarque, and explore the mills in the Couze Valley.

Day
01
Arrival in Mouleydier (cat.A) / Arrival to Bergerac (cat.B)

Today is all about rivers! Starting from Bergerac you cycle on small hidden roads through characteristic villages, forests and across vast fields, along the course of the river Dordogne. Although today’s route is relatively hilly, a swim in Limeuil awaits you as a reward, at the confluence of the rivers Vézère and Dordogne!

The terrain today is again slightly hilly. Eyzies-de-Tayac is world capital of the prehistory! Keep your eyes peeled for the Neanderthals! Afterwards you cycle through cool valleys and along untouched rivers with ample trout in it. We recommend a visit to the Château de Commarque, before arriving in the medieval village Sarlat in the late afternoon.

Fabulous sights are on today’s programme: Monfort and its palace and the fortifications of Domme, a medieval town located approx. 300 metres above the river! Please take your time to explore the little alleyways and little squares of Sarlat on foot.

Palaces in all varieties! We recommend you start early today, since there is so much to see! After leaving Sarlat you return to the Dordogne-valley at La Roque-Gageac. Here you are spoilt for choice: Beynac Palace, Castelnau Palace, Marqueyssac Palace, Fayrac Palace or maybe Les Milandes Palace? Afterwards you proceed to Siorac-en-Périgord or Belvès.

The fortress of Belvès has managed to maintain its charm over the years. You continue through pristine countryside and beautiful villages until you reach Beaumont du Périgord, an English bastide of the 13th century, dominated by its imposing church. You cycle through the Couze valley, always with a view of the clear water, past numerous mills, to the Château de Bannes, a masterpiece of medieval architecture, and the Château de Lanquais.

Enjoy your final day and explore the vineyards of Bergerac and Monbazillac by bike. Once you are past the hills, the magnificent Château de Monbazillac awaits you. Sample the world-famous, Beerenauslese’ and marvel at the fantastic view over Bergerac and the valley!
