As you pedal onwards you pass the diverse flora and fauna and encounter a variety of landscapes. Via Mosonmagyaróvár and Györ you go from Komáron to Visegrád. The destination of Budapest gets closer. Once you have arrived in the Hungarian capital, you can relax. The Hungarian cuisine invites you to enjoy. Let yourself be pampered!

  • Imperial city of Vienna: A Sachertorte in a traditional Viennese coffee house, an enchanting Fiaker tour through Vienna’s streets and a stroll through the city to St. Stephen’s Cathedral…enjoy your first day in the Imperial City and use the time to get to know the unique character of this beautiful metropolis.
  • The city of 17 bridges: Go on two wheels through the natural paradise of the small island. Take a short break in the pretty town of Mosonmagyaróvár. For example, take a leisurely stroll through the city.
  • Esztergom: Between vineyards and picturesque towns you cycle towards ‘Hungarian Rome’. The Basilica build there is considered to be Hungary’s largest church. Take your time for an extensive tour. You will be impressed!

In total, you cycle along the paths of the three-country tour over eight days. The cycle tour includes 320 kilometres, with you covering between 40 and 70 kilometres per day. The route runs mostly on flat and well-signposted paths. Need a little breather? You can put your feet up and relax on the boat trip from Visegrád to Budapest!

Itinerary at a glance

Treat yourself to a delicious pastry in Vienna before heading towards Budapest. The next capital city awaits you with Bratislava, and you can reach Mosonmagyaróvár via the picturesque Schütt Island before continuing to Esztergom.

We highly recommended that you arrive early in Vienna. This metropolis on the Danube has plenty to offer and it is worth staying there for longer. Enjoy a cup of coffee and the typical Viennese cake. the "Sachertorte“ in one of the numerous coffee houses. You could also treat yourself to a tour with a horse-drawn cab that they call "Fiaker“.

The first distance of your bike trip guides you through the national park Donau-Auen. There you will get to know the diversity of the flora and fauna as well as the manifold types of landscape. You pass the castle Orth and the village Eckertsau and reach Bad Deutsch Altenburg. There you can make an excursion on the Roman bike trail (Römerweg) to Carnuntum. The archaeological park is regarded as one of the most significant archaeological sites in Austria. After Hainburg you reach the border to Slovakia and it´s capital city Bratislava that is your next overnight stay.

You cycle a short distance through Slovakia today before you pass into Rajká, Hungary. Within just the first few kilometers of your cycle trip in Hungary, you will discover charming villages! This area is heavily influenced by agriculture. Your route guides you through the so-called Szigetköz (a small Rye Island). This is characterized by an uncountable number of Danube side arms. Today´s destination is Mosonmagyaróvár, which is also called the "City of 17 bridges“.

Also today you cycle through the nature paradise of the small Rye Island. On your way you pass Hédervár, which is perfectly suitable for lunch break. The castle is situated in the middle of a protected park. You should schedule a plenty of time for visiting Györ. The district capital offers many sights and a breathtaking historic center.

Today's cycle route takes you from Györ to the cross-border town of Komárom/Komárno on a newly constructed cycle path. You always cycle close to the course of the Danube. In your stage destination, it is worth visiting Fort Monostor, which was built in the middle of the 19th century and is one of the largest fortresses in Central Europe. You can also relax in the thermal baths and enjoy regional delicacies in the local restaurants

Another day that mostly runs close to the river in the flat Danube valley. In the course of this you pass different villages and while cycling you can view the vineyards in the background. Those interested in history should plan time for the Roman castle Kelemantia which is on the way. However the absolute highlight is Esztergom (also known as „Hungarian Rome“). Its basilica is Hungary's largest church, so be sure to allow enough time for an extensive tour.

In the first part, you cycle through the so-called “Danube Bend”, one of the most scenic sections along your cycle tour. The Royal Palace and the castle of Visegrád will delight you and the open-air museum as well as the baroque old town of Szentendre invites you to stay. You spend the last few kilometers on a Danube boat, from where you can relax and admire the surrounding landscape. During a city stroll in the Hungarian capital, you can reflect on all the wonderful impressions of your cycle tour. (Note: If you stay overnight in Visegrád, there is a boat trip from Esztergom to Visegrád on day 6. In April, September and October as well as on Mondays, the boat trip is probably not possible. You will receive a train ticket as an alternative)

In the Hungarian capital city there are many things to discover. If you are interested in, we would be pleased to book some extra nights for you. Our transfer from Budapest to Vienna is very comfortable (this can be arranged at additional charge).

Difficulty level

Medium

You cycle on bike trails, ways alongside a dam and partly on relatively quiet side roads. Busy roads are of short-term duration. You cycle on unmade paths only for 3 short distances otherwise you will find asphalted roads. On the whole tour the route is signed very well with a few exceptions in the Slovakian part. Altogether the tour is relatively easy with slightly increases in some sections. Because of the longer stages – especially with the sportive alternative - you should have a stamina.
