Group of cyclists on the Lech cycle path past Neuschwanstein Castle

Starting from the source of the Lech, in the middle of the Vorarlberg mountains, you will cycle between imposing peaks, past lush meadows and through the seemingly endless countryside. With the wild, unspoilt Lech as your constant companion, offering great photo opportunities, you will keep coming across small mountain villages. After Tyrol, you’ll reach Bavaria, where you leave the mountains behind, and the hilly foothills of the Alps begin. Famous royal castles sit enthroned in Füssen, whilst in Schongau, the historical old town is a delight. The river leads on, through the medieval town of Landsberg am Lech, to one of the oldest cities in Germany, Augsburg, with beautiful monuments from many eras.

Your journey commences in the town of Lech am Arlberg, from where you'll first cycle to the Formarinsee with the source of the Lech and soon reach Tyrol following the river. You'll spend the night in Elbigenalp. The route then takes you to the Bavarian border, and on to Füssen, Schongau, and Landsberg am Lech.

The journey concludes in "Fuggerstadt" the Fugger City of Augsburg with its beautiful historic center. Upon reaching your destination, make sure to take some time for a stroll through the Lechviertel, where the river meanders through the city in small canals.

  • The picturesque Lech spring: The river originates in the Lechquellen Mountains, which are named after it. Nearby, you'll find the Formarinsee, which forms each year from the melting water of the surrounding mountains. In 2015, the lake, along with the towering Rote Wand (Red Wall) above it, was chosen as Austria's most beautiful spot.
  • The royal castles near Füssen: In the Allgäu region, you'll encounter not one but two castles belonging to the Wittelsbach royal family – Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. These fairytale castles, famous worldwide, are nestled in a charming natural landscape. Despite the crowds, the opulent interiors are well worth a visit.
  • Historical Augsburg: The Baroque Town Hall, Maximilianstraße, and the Fuggerei are just three examples of notable places in Augsburg. Stroll along the old city wall at the Fischertor, which dates back to the Roman era. There, you'll also find the "Luginsland" beer garden, a perfect spot to take a break and relax.

The Lech River is a tributary of the Danube, flowing for a distance of 256 kilometers before it joins the Danube near Donauwörth. On the accompanying long-distance bike trail from the source in Vorarlberg to the finish of the Eurobike tour in Augsburg, you will cover around 230 kilometers. Split into five stages, you'll have ample time each day to explore the beautiful surroundings and the numerous attractions along the route. We'll provide you with all the essential information about the tour, and we'll take care of transporting your luggage from one accommodation to the next.

In addition to historical cities like Augsburg and world-famous landmarks such as Neuschwanstein Castle, Bavaria and southern Germany have many other places of interest to explore, perfectly suited for cycling adventuress.

As you leave the tranquil town of Füssen along the shimmering blue Forggensee, and ride through the Alpine foothills, a last quick glance behind you shows the mountains growing smaller. The Lechsee at Lechbruck is a good place for a short rest on the riverbank. In Schongau, you can explore the unique historical old town and while away the evening in a beer garden.

Schongau – formerly a Bavarian fortress – bears witness to the past, with walkable battlements up on the city walls. Epfach with the Roman museum and the baroque pilgrimage church in Vilgertshofen are good places to pause before you reach the medieval city centre of Landsberg. Nestled in the wild and romantic valley floor, the historical town hall and the Gothic town gate are the main attractions.

From Landsberg to Kaufering is 11km of the best-preserved section of the renowned Via Claudia. You’ll cycle past Königsbrunn and the old Bavarian ducal town of Friedberg to Augsburg. Many monuments of all eras define the cityscape. A visit to the Fuggerei is worthwhile – the world’s oldest continuing social housing project, a small city within the city.
