Reed belt on Lake Neusiedlersee

Cycling vacations in the Lake Neusiedl region are highly sought-after with us – and it's easy to see why! The regions in Austria and Hungary offer a myriad of attractions and experiences. The distinctive lake with its reed beds, the vast puszta, and the picturesque vineyards provide a landscape of unparalleled beauty. Observe the windsurfers on the lake or give it a try yourself, take a break at a local wine tavern and indulge in a tasting of one of the globally renowned wines. The local wildlife is equally remarkable – you might even catch sight of a stork or a wild horse. The Neusiedlersee region is rightfully a UNESCO World Heritage Site!

The starting point of this vacation is the stunning Podersdorf - don't forget to capture some photos at the renowned lighthouse. The initial excursion leads you along the Neusiedlersee cycle path to the charming town of Rust and through the vast, undulating vineyards. On day 3, wine and culture await as you pedal through the vineyards to the baroque Halbturn Castle.

The Lacken Cycle Path offers some truly unique flora and fauna. The saline pools resemble small lakes surrounded by untouched nature. If you're fortunate, you might encounter Przewalski's horses and Mangalitza pigs along the way. The following day, take the ferry to Mörbisch and cycle to Sopron in Hungary. Wine and cherries will accompany you on the final day of your excursion - enjoy the breathtaking views into the Hungarian countryside once more!

  • The charming old town centre of Sopron: The delightful town in Hungary captivates with its medieval center, picturesque squares, and historic buildings. Explore the fire tower and wander through the narrow lanes – the atmosphere is truly enchanting!
  • Water sports and swimming fun at Lake Neusiedl: With approximately 300 days of sunshine, the shimmering lake beckons you to enjoy its waters – whether swimming, kayaking, or more pedaling on a pedalo. Ever wanted to try surfing? No problem, thanks to the steady breeze, you can also windsurf here.
  • Enjoy the wine in Rust am See: The picturesque town is renowned for its traditional wine culture, particularly for the famous Ruster Ausbruch. Sample wines at a wine tavern, wander through the old town with its historic timber-framed houses, and observe the abundant birdlife of Lake Neusiedl.

During the individual excursions around Lake Neusiedl, you'll cover approximately 50 kilometers, including boat and ferry rides. The cycling paths are mostly flat, with one or two hills to overcome towards Hungary, but overall, the route is quite easy. You'll spend the night in the lovely Hotel Seewirt and Haus Attila in Podersdorf, where you can unwind in the wellness area.

Between the reed belt and the vineyards, our cycling tours around Lake Neusiedl offer flat bike paths, breathtaking views of sailors and surfers, and around 2,000 hours of sunshine annually.

Itinerary at a glance

On Lake Neusiedl you will cycle through wine-growing areas and the reed beds. Watch the surfers and sailors, and perhaps you will encounter Przewalski's horses and storks. An excursion takes you to the charming border town of Sopron.

Move into your room and take over the rental bicycles and tour documentation.

Wines with a worldwide reputation grow on soft hills, offering a fantastic view on the lake. Rust is said to be the town of storks. A stone-bust of the Turk of Purbach commemorates the story of one very drunk Turkish warrior who missed the general flight of his regiment and got stuck in a chimney. Enjoy the mild afternoon sun during a boat passage across the Lake.

Wines from Burgenland have an international reputation. During your cycle tour of the gently undulating vineyards you enjoy a stunning view of the lake. Castle Halbturn is the most important baroque building of the country Burgenland. If you are very lucky you can even spot one of the colourful bee-eaters, birds breeding in sand-caves during summer.

"Lacken" are approx. 50 cm deep salty ponds. This local attraction of Seewinkel was name-giver to the region – and obviously to the cycle path. You cycle past swampy meadows, willow trees and vineyards. Peacefully grazing Mangaliza swine and Przewalsky horses add to the unique experience.

Enjoy a day of recuperation, relaxing and many facilities of the Lake. Sailing, windsurfing or swimming. Or explore the recreational facilities of your hotel.

Cross the lake by ferry. From festival town Mörbisch you reach the Hungarian city Sopron. The historic old town with lively streets and alleys and medieval buildings has a colourful life. By ferry back to the other lake side.

Again you change to the opposite bank by ferry and cycle past vineyards and cherry trees (especially lovely in spring when all the trees are in full flush). Stunning views of the lake and the Hungarian plain let you forget the short climbs.
