Stahleck Castle Bacharach

Mainz – Koblenz, MS Olympia

Legendary Rhine River

8 Days / 7 Nights
Easy
Stahleck Castle Bacharach

Explore the beautiful Rhine by bike and boat. Spend the nights on the MS Olympia and travel through the picturesque wine region during the days. The ship takes you through from Mainz to Koblenz. On the relaxed bike tours, you will pass mystical castle ruins and legendary fortresses. You will feel the charm of the colourful half-timbered towns, and discover the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Rhine Gorge. The setting and countryside is a dream. Idyllic islands in the Rhine alternate with steep slate cliffs and dense forests. You can see the Electoral Castle in Eltville and the wine loading crane in Oestrich-Winkel. In addition to the famous Drosselgasse in Rüdesheim, you can visit the Niederwald monument commemorating the Unification of Germany, and the Pfalzgrafenstein Castle. Naturally, this bike and boat holiday also includes a view of the legendary Lorelei. What a joy!

In Mainz, you meet up with the river boat, MS Olympia. The first part of the cycling holiday leads south along the Rhine cycle path to Nierstein, before the boat takes you along to Worms. Then the route passes Nierstein back to Mainz, and the following day on to Rudesheim. The next day’s cycling leads you to Oberwesel. After a short detour to Boppard, you cycle on to Coblenz.

  • Mainz: Wander through the old town, gazing at the original part-timbered houses and the medieval market square! The market fountain there was constructed in the Renaissance style. Other sights to see include the Mainz Cathedral and the Gutenberg Museum.
  • Nierstein: With about 1000 hectares of vineyards, the ‘City of Riesling’ is the largest wine producer on the Rhine. In the centre of the city, you can explore the medieval marketplace and the magnificent houses built for city nobles.
  • Worms: In the renowned city of the Nibelung’s epic poem, follow in the footsteps of Siegfried and Kriemhild, the protagonists of the Nibelung saga.
  • Coblenz: In the lively city centre, a monument of Kaiser Wilhelm marks the spot where the Rhine and the Mosel meet. Travel comfortably with the cable car to the Ehrenbreitstein fortress and enjoy the wonderful view.

This is an easy cycling holiday where you spend the nights on the river ship MS Olympia. Most of the cycling is on paved bike paths and embankments. You will also cycle on quiet country roads with no significant gradients. That’s why this combined bike and boat tour is ideal for beginner and recreational cyclists.

itinerary at a glance

Individual arrival in Mainz and embarkation at 4.00 pm. On the ship, you will be welcomed by your captain and crew and the tour management.

A short leg of the journey with lots of time to indulge: directly alongside the Rhine, you cycle on the well-paved Rhine Cycle Route to Nierstein. With almost 1.000 hectares of vineyard surface area, Nierstein is the biggest wine-growing municipality on the Rhine. You may also visit the historic Old Town with its medieval market square and the noble houses. In the afternoon, enjoy the boat tour from Nierstein to Worms.

Start off for today`s cycle tour in Worms, the city of the Nibelungs. On an extensive cycle tour alongside the bank of the Rhine River, you will have again the possibility to fall for the charms of the vineyards and to enjoy the varied scenery of the Rhine. Today, you cycle from the south towards Nierstein, also referred to as the Riesling City. From there, your ship sets sail for Mainz.

Today the Rhine River and its surrounding area show you the reason why the Upper Middle Rhine Valley has been declared UNESCO World Heritage. Beautiful Rhine islands, steep slate cliffs and vineyards characterize the area around Rüdesheim. On the bike tour, cycle past Eltville with electoral castle, and Oestrich-Winkel, whose landmark is a historic wine loading crane, to Rüdesheim. Here we suggest that you visit the world-famous Drosselgasse.

In the morning, start off from Rüdesheim by bike. Past thick forests and gorgeous vineyards, riding always alongside the Rhine, you will pass sights like the Niederwald Moument and Pfalzgrafenstein Castle, before reaching Oberwesel, today`s destination.

From Oberwesel, you start for a short cycle tour along the Rhine to Boppard. On this short trip, you come by many scenic outposts from where you have the possibility to enjoy the varied landscape. From the bank of the river, the many fortresses and the legendary Loreley cliff offer a picturesque backdrop all along the way

Cycle from Boppard to Koblenz, today`s destination. Here the Moselle River joins the Rhine. One last time, cycle past impres-sive buildings like the Marksburg Castle in Braubach and StolzenfelsCastle. Let the day come to an end at the Deutsche Eck, the German Corner, or ride to the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress and enjoy the fantastic panoramic viewover the city of Koblenz
