Bad Ischl will be the 2024 Capital of Culture

On a journey of discovery in the “Culture-kammergut”
Vlog: Bike tours in the Salzkammergut

The European Union has been awarding the title of Capital of Culture since 1985, to ‘highlight the richness and diversity of the cultures of Europe,’ among other things. Bad Ischl in Upper Austria has secured the title for the year 2024, prevailing over numerous competitors.

The city acts as a showcase for the entire Salzkammergut. The winning concept ‘Salt and Water as DNA’ aims to impress with an open ‘Culture-Kammergut’ that goes beyond historical clichés. And the Salzkammergut certainly has enough culture to offer!

Bad Ischl impresses with numerous cultural highlights

In addition to the imperial family around Emperor Franz Joseph I and his Sisi, the former health resort also attracted artists such as Franz Grillparzer and Johann Nestroy. The operetta composer Franz Lehár most obviously left his mark on the imperial city, however.

His villa can still be viewed there in its original state. The famous Lehár Theater from 1827 is now also used as a venue and cinema.

The annual Lehár Festival also takes place in Bad Ischl in July and August. Dedicated primarily to the performance of operettas, the festival developed from the tradition of summer theatre for spa guests. Also worth seeing: the Whistler’s Day, which takes place every year on August 15th. On this day, typical instruments for the Salzkammergut are used – and without any kitsch. For example, the Seitelpfeife, the Schwegelpfeife and the Maultrommel are played.

Explore the region on two wheels

In the Salzkammergut, diligent pedalling is rewarded with beautiful lake landscapes and a multitude of sights. The icing on the cake is sweet delicacies from the various pastry shops – including the famous Zauner pastry shop in Bad Ischl.

Especially in spring and summer, cyclists can indulge their passion on various tours and discover a lot…
