Old Greetsiel sieltief with a windmill in the background

When cycling in East Frisia, you can expect to experience everything the North Sea has to offer—and then some! Picturesque sandy beaches, iconic lighthouses, and peaceful harbor towns are waiting to be explored by you. Enjoy the renowned tranquility and scenic beauty of the island of Norderney. Don't forget to pack a windbreaker, as the coastal breeze can be quite brisk.

Your accommodation is located in Norden offering a wonderful place to stay. Your initial outing focuses on exploring lighthouses, as you pedal through Greetsiel to reach the region's iconic yellow and red landmark. The Pilsum Lighthouse stands tall in the distance, alongside the Eilsum bell tower. On the following day, embark on a ferry journey to Norderney, where you'll enjoy a scenic bike ride along the island's stunning coastline.

You can also journey back in time as fascinating historical insights await you at Störtebeker's pirate nest, in the village of Münkeböe, and at Lütetsburg Castle. On the final day of the tour, the choice is yours. Begin by cycling along the coast and soaking in the mesmerizing views of the sea. Then, opt to take the ferry to the car-free island of Baltrum or relish the serene ambiance of Dornum Castle.

  • Island feeling on Norderney and Baltrum: Norderney is famed for its expansive sandy beaches, perfect for sunbathing and water sports enthusiasts. The island boasts a vibrant promenade lined with restaurants, cafes, and shops, as well as a seawater adventure pool and thalassotherapy center for wellness seekers. In contrast, Baltrum is renowned for its peaceful ambiance and unspoiled natural surroundings.
  • The Dörpmuseum Münkeboe is an open-air museum that showcases rural life in East Frisia. Situated within historic buildings such as farmhouses, barns, and granaries dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries, visitors can explore authentically furnished rooms and discover historical tools, equipment, furniture, and household items. The museum offers a vivid portrayal of the everyday culture and traditions of the region.
  • The garden grounds of Lütetsburg Castle are distinguished by their diversity and beauty. The landscape park spans several hectares and features meticulously maintained garden areas, lawns, ponds, and woodland areas. Particularly noteworthy are the historic trees, including rare species and ancient rhododendrons. The park is artistically designed and offers numerous charming walking paths as well as tranquil areas for relaxation.

Despite covering approximately 220 kilometers over the four-day tour, East Frisia ensures a smooth and leisurely journey for you. Well-maintained cycle paths and the flat terrain are perfect for a relaxed biking experience. In addition to providing breakfast and dinner, your accommodation offers a highlight with its wellness area. In Dornum, we invite you to savor an East Frisian tea accompanied by a slice of cake.

The North Sea exudes a unique allure—raw yet beautiful, seemingly closed off at first glance yet ultimately welcoming. On our pages, we offer you intriguing insights into travel options along the North Sea Coast Cycle Route.

Itinerary at a glance

You'll stay in Norden during your journey, exploring Norderney Island by bike, tranquil moorland areas, the Dornum Water Castle, and enjoying views of the Wadden Sea. From Greetsiel, you'll cycle to the Pilsum Lighthouse and Eilsum.

You arrive in the oldest town of Eastern Friesland, the town Norden. After that you can stroll through the nice town a bit to get in the right mood for the next day.

Cycling alongside the dyke you reach the 600 years old fishing village Greetsiel. After a break in the picturesque cutter harbour you continue cycling to the lighthouse in Pilsum. Cycling through the inland you reach Eilsum with the 36 metres high belfry. Via the old dyke of Wirdum you drive back to the North.

Today you visit the island Norderney (ferry inclusive) and you will leave all your cares behind. As an alternative the town of Norden has something to offer too: for example, the Tea Museum, the heritage railway or you cycle to the seal breeding station in Norddeich and watch the feeding of the seals. By the way you will learn some worth knowing things about the World Heritage natural site Wadden Sea.

Today you will enjoy a day full of history. At first you cycle into the pirates' nest of Störtebeker. You cycle further to Münkeboe. In the local “Dörpmuseum” (museum) you will learn a lot of things about life and work of the people in a little moorland village a hundred years ago. Via Berumerfehn and Hage you reach Lütetsburg. The castle grounds are one of the biggest and most beautiful ones in Northern Germany. Here you can finish the day in the park cafè.

From Norddeich you cycle in eastern direction into the littlest bathing resort of the North Sea coast with a lot of recreation offers. Here you have a chance to take a ferry (not inclusive; see our note) to the island Baltrum. Alternatively you cycle alongside the dyke to Dornum. The former site of East Frisian chiefs with its water castle has a lot to show. Enjoy typical East Frisian tea and homemade cakes in the castle garden and explore the castle.
